I thought 'realm' too, but then it runs into the word across the bottom, which is 'redirect (a path)' with the letters R_R_UT_. So that's 'reroute', which is where that troublesome o comes from. I'll have to check the answer tomorrow.

I really don't know where this Luann s/l is going. I thought the Quill story, such as it was, was finished until he popped up the other day. But really, any opportunity for Quill to teach us about Australians is good, so I'm happy. :-)

No, I don't either. Just turning up to say, 'I'm going,' and then going? There has to be more to it than that.

Amazon reviews are really amusing sometimes. There's always the ones who pick at a book and refuse to see any merit whatsoever in it. I like the tearing apart of the classics best. Pride and Prejudice gets "I could carve a better man (Mr Darcy) out of a banana" and a reader of Little Women though her 3 quid would have been better spent on a sandwich.

Sorry can't think of single word with those letters that suit the clue.

As a cricket fan I'm naturally pleased but I do wish they'd shut up about it on the telly. We're still talking about our football world cup win in 1966 ;-)

Mark Twain hated P&P so much he wanted to dig Jane Austen up and hit her with her own shinbone. I think he'd have loved Amazon reviews. :-)

I tolerate cricket in a 'I'll ignore it if it ignores me' way, but it's a bit hard to ignore when it's the lead story on the news bulletins and the first six pages of the paper. I don't know about the players, but the media need a bit of perspective.

No idea on the crossword clue. Did you know that crossword puzzles are a 20th century invention? I just found that out the other day in a list of things we didn't have 110 years ago. I would have guessed that they'd been around for about 300 years!

Reviews of books and movies can be amusing and sometimes they're helpful. You have to read them all with a grain of salt, though. And keep in mind that usually only those who feel passionately about the thing (good or bad) will take the time to write. Many others may feel it's "pretty good" but not bother sending in a review. I watch a lot of old movies and keep a (huge, heavy, unwieldy) book of reviews of just about every movie ever made in the den. I find it pretty accurate in its 1 - 4 star ratings and its review comments. Sometimes it refuses to give ANY stars and just puts in BOMB. No review at all!

I did know that! I read an interview the other with a crossword compiler talking about how he'll celebrate the 100th birthday of the crossword in a couple of years time.

If I don't like a book, I'll just shrug and move onto the next one (well, I might mention it here), but I really like the one-star reviews because those people have hated a book so much they've been moved to write about. Sometimes I think it would be more eloquent if they just put a bomb symbol too. :-)

We don't have Thanksgiving at all, of course, but the Australian character in this US comic strip claimed we did. Because it's so hard to find an actual Australian to check these things.

you should start. but it couldn't be turkey, it would have to be something native... though ideally not endangered, because, you know, that would be uncool.

but if you spread a fake story about eating duck billed platypus you could freak americans out and get your own back.

Back when the comic strip mentioned it, I found the website they got their info from: some little country town that has a harvest festival and calls it Thanksgiving Day. The comic took it straight off the website: it's all about apples and grapes, apparently. No roast quokka at all.
