That's all really good advice. For me, a big part was how they responded to me, too. Are they friendly on the phone? Willing to answer questions? How about what they think of my work once I've applied? I got two acceptances. One director was polite. The other said she loved the verbal energy in my work and was really excited to work with me. Take a guess which one I picked.

MJC's #2 & 3 are dead-on, especially since you work one-on-one with your professors for all but 2 weeks of the year. In general for MFA programs, I think it's worth aiming high--some programs have very selective admission, but it's worth waiting to get into the best, especially since there really isn't any funding for low-res, so that is largely taken out of the where-should-I-go equation.
I've heard good things about Warren Wilson--it's a serious time commitment, but the faculty is solid. And a few slammers whose writing I respect have gone there (Matthew Olzmann, Jamaal/Versiz May, Tim Cook...) and liked it.
