Being inadequate at expressing himself wasn't anything new to Sanjay. He stuttered when he got nervous, panicked when forced into conversation with people not in engineering, and barely said anything when his girlfriend came out of some dream-induced coma ( ... )

While Charlene had always been a light sleeper, she never had difficulties with the process of falling asleep. It now took her more than an hour to feel remotely drowsy. Her mind was constantly bombarded with a million thoughts, all compelling her to close her eyes and dream; however, she would focus so intensely on doing what she was told that she couldn't do it at all. It was a paradox she didn't appreciate in the least.

She shifted slightly in the couch, removing the pillow off her face and placing it under the ceiling. Then she just stared at the ceiling for what seemed like ages. Time was going by at a snail's pace again. Maybe I should give it one more try. All I need to do is close my eyes and...Before she could follow her mind's instructions, Charlene heard the 'swoosh' sound of the door opening. She looked tired, he noticed, even possibly frustrated. At what, he wasn't sure... surely it wasn't from him, was it?

"Y-yeah..." He replied before closing the distance between them and sat next to her on the couch. He slouched down, crossing his arms across his chest while wracking his brain for something to talk about. "S-some shore leave, huh?" He wished a better location was picked, but really anything off the ship was acceptable to him.

Both were avoiding eye contact, a far cry from their previous interactions. Had things really gotten this strained between them? A silence enveloped them and he wondered if she was waiting for him to apologize.

"You can say that again," Charlene quipped, keeping her eyes anywhere but directly at Sanjay. She couldn't place why she couldn't face him, but something was definitely stopping her. "It's pretty dull around here. There's nothing really to do..."

She paused for a second, waiting for him to chime in, but nothing came. The silence between was different from what she was used to. It was awkward and tension-filled. She couldn't help but wonder if she was the cause of this sudden change.

Glancing at him, she blurted out, "I haven't been the best girlfriend and friend to you lately. I'm sorry."
