Game Background:
Dante is demon hunter, a half human/half demon son of the demon knight Sparda who betrayed his own kind in order to save the human world from demon thralldom 2,000 years ago; Vergil is his twin brother who eschewed the human world in favor of the demon world. Dante and Vergil were separated from each other at age nine upon the death of their mother, and Vergil was taken to live in the demon world. As adults, they were reunited, but Vergil was killed perpetuating a plan to initiate hell on earth, which Dante fought to stop.
Nero is a young knight of the Order of the Sword, who has mysteriously come into some demonic power (a "devil bringer" that has replaced his right arm with a demon appendage), and is said to be somehow a descendant of the demon knight Sparda. Nero is in possession of Vergil's one-of-a-kind sword, Yamato, which was broken until Nero picked it up. The sword can create a gateway between the demon and human worlds. Yamato resides in spirit form inside of Nero's devil bringer. Nero also has a demon form that can be "triggered" (as does Dante). Nero's demon form is a manifestation of the spirit of Vergil.
Dante and Nero meet for the first time when a plot was hatched to resurrect a demon "savior" using the blood of a son of Sparda and ultimately evolve humans into demon angels. This plot was orchestrated by Sanctus, the patriarch of the Order of the Sword, a religious order based in the city of Fortuna that worships Sparda as mankind's savior despite the fact that he was a demon. During the unfolding of this plot, Nero's foster sister Kyrie is abducted by the patriarch and imprisoned in a plane of hell that exists inside of the savior's body. Nero is imprisoned for a time in the same place, but with Dante's help, he is able to escape, foil the patriarch's plans, save the world, and rescue Kyrie.
There are three special weapons in this universe: Yamato, the sword that was gifted to Vergil; Rebellion, the sword that was gifted to Dante; and Sparda, the sword that the demon knight used.
Most weapons in this universe have names. Nero carries a sword called "Red Queen" and a double-barreled gun called "Blue Rose". Dante carries Rebellion and twin guns called "Ebony and Ivory". All weapons used to kill demons have names and are categorized as "devil arms".
Devil May Cry is the name of Dante's devil-slaying business.
