Jumping back, the hat fell from his head and he slammed into the shelf. The corresponding crash let the young man know that everything on the shelf was no longer on the shelf. Slowly, he turned and found that all the filters were now on the floor, creating a rainbow of plastic sheets. His eyes went wide and the hat was thrown to the ground with less care than he'd intended

Cora was not supposed to go beyond the fences. Her father had caught her once, the day after the angry men in dark clothes passed through town, and gave her the biggest whooping ever. Still, Cora liked the fields too much to give him any mind. They were so big and open that she thought she could see the edge of the world from them. She was especially eager to get to the fields that day as the flitterwites were in full bloom. She loved the flitterwites.
The fields were just as she expected - wide and rolling, a blanket of pastels that swayed with the breeze. The raggedy man laying flat on his back at the top of the hill was not expected. His clothing was ripped and dirty, though they seemed to be his Solstice Best. Cora’s gram would never have let her get her Solstice Best into such a state
