The Elusive Burger (OCs, Carter and the other Hilltop waitress; G; 500 words)erinm_4600January 29 2010, 16:05:54 UTC
David was watching the waitress on the other side of the counter as she pulled a plate of scrambled eggs and bacon down from the shelf. He was really hungry, but the burger wasn't up yet. He liked to sit at the counter - his mother preferred the booths along the far wall, but the lunch rush had beaten them to the Hilltop that morning. Behind the shelf, David was almost tall enough to see back into the kitchen, when the cook was busy doing whatever he did back there to prepare everyone's meals

You know, I was just doing my job. I wasn’t even supposed to be working that day. Jack had caught the Fever, though, and Moose was Ozma-knows-where. Probably trying to pick up some cheap hooker on 10th in hopes of a freebie. Man’s got more balls than brains.
So there I was, working the desk in back at the Twister. It’s a cushy job. All you really gotta do is man the telephones, keep the riffraff out, and make sure the Mystic Man don’t kill himself. Sometimes I even get to give those riffraff a bit of a beat-down. That’s always fun. It is a bit sad, sometimes, seeing the Old Man like that. Sure, he’s all-knowing and he puts on a great show. But you don’t see him after hours. You don’t see what them Vapors do to him. What a shame.
But that night… that night, there were all sorts of visitors for the Old
