Since we started our house hunt, I have sifted through over 175 online house listings that more or less fit our criteria. Of those houses, we have visited 37(!) of them personally. Some of the houses have had potential if we wanted to spend the first year tearing everything out and replacing it (something that we can't really afford); others were ( Read more... )

A couple of Phx-area pointers: an older house may need work, but it may also be better built to begin with. Our old house in Chandler was bulit in 1984, and the guy who did the inspection told us that the stucco and such were much better quality than on newer houses. (The wiring was crap in some places, but I think that was DIY work by former owners.)

And there's a lot of pollution by Sky Harbor (I used to work at 40th street, literally on the other side of the fence from the airport). Don't know about the area you're looking at specifically but I've been told there's a lot of heavy metals in the ground in the airport area. Maybe there's more info online somewhere? Good point on storage. It's one of the things that drives me absolutely batty in our apartment.

Don't buy a house in a really, really, really awful location.

I agree with the above comment. One thing you can't change is location.

Wow! Glad to see you on here. :) How have you been?

And you're right. Sometimes it takes three people in a row telling me the same thing before I realize that I'm compromising on something stupid.

I often forget to check LJ for long periods (or I do I sometimes don't log in). Plus, I rarely have anything to say that isn't angsty BS about how, at the top of my class, I still have no job, and even if I did have one I'm not sure that I still want to be an attorney. No one wants to read that. :/

How have you been? We haven't talked in quite awhile. Did I tell you that I ran into your "little brother" Matt (from HK)?
