Running

This post has been germinating in my head for a while now.

I took up running as a challenge last year ffrom padge. My foot had been out of a cast for about three or four months, and while I'd done a bit of hiking and minor rehab work, I was still in recovery mode. He asked me to see how far I could go on a treadmill - speed didn't matter, just ( Read more... )

I wore out my knees but good from my XTREEM days doing stunts on skateboards and rollerblades, and didn't really do my back any favors either, so running is a deal breaker for me these days- I prefer mountain bikes for outdoor stuff. But I can run faster than the Ethiopian chicken. I ran track in the 7th grade, and I was damn good at it. I did a 400yd dash in 57 seconds and change. I could run for two miles in + 14:30 (6:03 was my best time for a standard mile). The summer after my infamous third year of college, I quit smoking, quit coffee, and started running again. I was doing 2.5 laps around Audubon park on a regular basis without a problem (and if you've been in NOLA in June between 5 & 6pm, then you know the added challenge of doing this ( ... )

Great advice, and thank you.

Props to you for running in Audubon in the summer.

Do you have any stretches that you'd recommend?

Running in Audubon, mid-summer, especially after a rain damn near necessitates scuba gear. There's no way I could've done it when I was still smoking as much as I was right before I quit.

Crap- I don't know- I'm totally the wrong person to ask- I've always had trouble with flexibility and stretching. Before running, though- I can recommend a few.

Before any vigorous run, stretch your hamstrings out as much as possible. If you have a stool or countertop, put your foot up on that and try to touch your head to your leg. Go back up as slowly as possible. Another good one if you don't have that hand- go down in a split as far as you can. Touch your hands to your opposite elbows, bend over, and try and rest your forearm on the ground. You should be able to stretch out the entire backs of your legs pretty well with this one. If your ankle still troubles you, do several lunge stretches.

Job/Warm up for 10ish minutes THEN stretch. Stretching a cold muscle does nothing but bad bad things. Stretching a warm muscle is bestest.

Good for you! I've not been able to do any running in the last few months... always too busy or exhausted... but I've been looking forward to picking it up again.

I really couldn't give you any advice... the only thing I ever really discovered was that pushing myself that extra little bit, while sucking, did seem to improve my performance the next time I ran.
