I'm just embarrassed

Real life is pissing me off. I'm from North Carolina. But today I don't want to admit that. The primary yesterday included an Amendment to define marriage as one man and one woman. And it f-ing passed!!!!! I really thought there was a chance it would be defeated. I was wrong ( Read more... )

omg - really?, the real world is only good for visiting

i read in the news that it was likely to pass. i didn't know if it could be over-turned or not... but you say that it might happen, because of the case of California? that sounds good.

i hope that it can. it's really sad to read about all this stuff, especially in America, which has traditionally been quite good with LGBT rights (it's not fair to always compare the US to the UK and say Europeans are more enlightened or stuff like that, when the rest of Europe has an atrocious for LGBT rights and acceptance. believe me, I grew up there and didn't appreciate all the shit i had to put up for being who i am).

i think in general there is more acceptance though, and hopefully stuff like this is just temporary set-backs. :-S

We are a fairly progressive nation as a whole. But at the same time, we were founded by Puritans. Many of their attitudes still prevail - work hard, worship God, don't view porn, don't talk about sex. That's one of the reason broadcast TV still doesn't show nudity and if they do, it's news.

I surely thought by now all of this would be a total non-issue. It's 2012. What difference does it make who decides to live with whom? It shouldn't except to the two people involved. But in North Carolina I am clearly in the minority. Sad, really.

I'm stunned by the margin of defeat - or passage I guess. I think it's because the holy rollers mobilized their churches and voted en-masse. Incredible.

I live in Washington and our Governor passed a law to make gay marriage legal, which is great, but the same day it passed all the right-wring crazies and republicans held a confrence to say that they are going to file an appeal to force voters to declare it illegal. I hope that we'll have enough voters with common sense to make sure it stays legal because it really shouldn't matter what gender your spouse is as long as you both love each other and are adults.

I think I heard, and I could be wrong, that another state had brought up a measure like the one you are talking about, where Marriage would only be defined as being between and man and woman, and brought it to the Supreme Court to have it ruled as unconstitutional. Hopefuly if that really is something happening that it'll mean that other states can't pass laws like that on in NC.

That would be excellent, if the US Constitution made it impossible for states to determine "legal" marriage.

I knew North Carolina was conservative but this is just ridiculous. And embarrassing.

:( I was pretty upset. There's a change.org petition to repeal it, if you're interested. Also, some good news, President Obama just announced his support for marriage equality.

I wonder if he had announced it earlier if it would have made a difference. But probably not. This is, unfortunately, a fairly Republican/conservative state.

I'll go to change.org and sign the petition. Thanks.
