I love this one. And a very good plot device for the opening scene. :D

Once I catch up, I'll probably feel a little bad about that. A little. :)

Just a little. :)

I'm hoping that's the reason no one's read Crossed Wires. I thought it might be because no one liked it that there were so few reviews, but it's more that no one's actually read it yet. So, some catching up on all sides. :)

Nice!

Now stating the obvious: Why not materialise the TARDIS at the Core instead of running around, trying to find the entrance to that Core?
Or would that make it too simple? Of course they wouldn't have Lux with them, but then materialise around Lux and take him with them to the Core in the TARDIS. They can identify everybody that is in that group. He would not understand at once, but he could be briefed before they exited at the Core. And this way they would not have to meet River at all.

Good point, and something I should have addressed. My thinking is that teleporting directly into the Core was not possible, and there were protections established to avoid anyone materalizing. All to protect CAL. Which the Doctor would have detected, but not known the reason.

Also, he wouldn't want to risk the Vastha Nerada getting into the TARDIS. It might also be necessary for a visual confirmation that the person has only one shadow. I do believe I stated that the Doctor needed both the hand-held scanner and the TARDIS to know where the swarms were.

But a good point raised! Thank you. It might end up inspiring something else.

You have good points for not materialising at the Core too. Though the TARDIS is more advanced than anything in that era.
Would the TARDIS not be able to extract only and just only the person of interest and let him/her appear somewhere else without any unwanted attachments?

True. I got the impression that the Vashta Nerada were one threat that there's not a lot of information about even for the Time Lords. And there have been things that alter where the TARDIS lands, so... technology gets sneakier and smarter all the time.

Perhaps it's more a matter of whatever they're using to protect CAL would interfere just enough with the navigation system to make piloting the TARDIS with precision dangerous? And while Ten is arguably the best pilot of all the Doctor's incarnations, can we please remember he readily admits that he failed his driver's test?
;-)

Good story, and yes- I'm woefully behind in reading and even more so in commenting. RL is being a right pain in the arse right now. Hope you had a wonderful trip and happy you're back safe and sound.

Well, I wasn't thinking about his driving record. ;)

It's okay. I have a lot to do now that I'm home, and have to work through the inertia that's been hindering my efforts to improve my life. Trust me, I had a ball! I only wish it could've lasted all summer. :)

I have to say that I'm very happy with how you dealt with Bill. I still haven't seen any episodes she's in, and I probably won't either. I lost interest in the newer Doctor's when they kept going on about how important Clara was. I couldn't stand her character. I still love reading about Doctor Who, now more then ever actually, and watching the older shows. I really, really hate River Song so I'm glad the 10th Doctor has been warned against her. The way she just expected the Doctor to do her bidding when she sent that message though. Just what has he been having to put up with? I feel so sorry for him.

To this day, I've only seen her - and not really her, as it turned out - in 12's final Christmas special. So I've kinda been a bit unfair to her. Especially after meeting Pearl Mackie. Still, had to work with what I knew about.

Anyway, once again glad you liked it!
