T'Ani sat in the holodeck, taking in her surroundings, an air of sadness about her. She had created this program as motivation in her diligent work to find a way to reunite with Pavel and remain with him. She had been so close this time that she hadn't even stopped for food or sleep over the past several days.
Today, however, was the last time she had worked on the project and would also be the last time she ran her Integer program in the holodeck. To his delight, she was sure, T'Ani had relinquished her workspace in the Time Lab back to Professor Potts and under Sil's gentle orders, would be going back home for a while. Why?
Pavel had found someone else, and though part of her was overjoyed that he had found happiness, another part of her was devastated. How long had she really expected him to wait for her?
Married. Pavel was married. Why was that so hard for her to accept? He would be a great husband and had expressed his desire to one day have children. Her heart ached as she lingered on this thought. Someone else would bear Pavel's children. She closed her eyes for a moment before beginning to convince herself that this was all for the best. After all, Pavel's wife was human, which meant that their children would have normal childhoods and wouldn't have to worry about things that semi-Vulcan children would.
Also, she was Starfleet, in his time, and serving on Integer. These three things alone made her more suitable to be his wife. She wasn't roaming around the galaxies and traveling back and forth through time with a brother who wanted her dead.
Tears filled her hazel eyes as she stood to her feet and prepared to say her final goodbyes. She took a deep breath and strode through the holo-Integer until she came to one of her favorite places - engineering. Here, she had recreated Anaba and had continued the friendship that had been tragically cut short. She had accepted several of his dinner invitations and always found his love of her insults fascinating and quite amusing as well. She had one last dinner date with him, making sure to use a large amount of her very best insults since she was sure this would be the last time she ran this program.
Once she was finished, she had a rather pleasant conversation with Commander Leslie. She had wished for more time with this particular hologram, as there was still quite a bit of suspicion and skepticism towards her.
She then took one last trip around, talking to various crew members as she went and ended in front of Pavel's ready room.
She rang the buzzer and Pavel came to his feet upon seeing her. He made his way across the room and smiled warmly as he took her into his arms and sighed in Russian, "A sight for sore eyes. I'm so glad for the distraction."
She allowed him to hold her for a few moments before she pulled away from him and offered a smile. She stated, "Pavel, there's something that I need to talk to you about."
He looked to her then with concern in his eyes, "All right. Come sit down."
He took her arm and gently led her over to the sofa where they both took a seat. He asked, "What is it, Love?"
She replied, "There is something that I have to do...for us."
Not liking the sound of this, Pavel took her hands into his and asked, "Ya ne ponimayu. What do you mean?"
T'Ani steeled herself as she stated, "I have to end this program, Pavel. I won't be coming back after today."
He blinked, saying nothing as he looked into her eyes. "What's happened? Did you find the way to go back and stay?"
She looked down at their hands and shook her head. "My experiments and calculations were nearly completed. However, there is a better reason for me to stop the program."
Pavel's voice softened as he whispered, "You've found someone else?"
A lump rose in her throat and she felt tears once again stinging her eyes as she forced a smile, "No, Pavel. You have."
It seemed to take a moment for this news to sink in before finally, he looked to T and asked, "Are you sure?"
She nodded and sighed, "You are to be married tomorrow and I can't risk your happiness by continuing the experiment and coming back here would just be too painful."
He sighed, "T..."
She gently pressed her fingers to his lips as her eyes pleaded with him, "Please don't say anything. Things happen for a reason and I hope that this means that you'll be very happy and live a very long life."
T'Ani stayed to talk with him and say good-bye for a little while longer, yet she didn't linger. Finally, she exited the program and headed to her quarters to pack her things and await her transport to Vulcan.
