Something few people really know about me is that I have a great love of botany. Since I was a child, I’ve always loved tending to plants, trees, and flowers and watching them grow under my care. Believe it or not, I still have a bonsai I’ve been taking care of since I was a young boy. It was my first one and I drew quite a few odd looks when I insisted upon bringing it aboard The Enterprise, but I couldn’t risk anything happening to it.

You could say I have a soft spot for the vegetation that grows on the various planets we visit. I know there are dangers associated with any new lifeform, including plants and such, but my curiosity always gets the best of me.

I often visit the botany lab and have actually started a collection of exotic plants that they have tested and approved to be safe for Humans. You know, when we go to these new places, we always worry about the dangers that the atmosphere or the life there might cause us. Rarely do we pause to consider the effect we might have on the planets we visit.

Unfortunately that was brought to our attention today when we discovered after only an hour of being on the surface, the life around us started dying. Naturally I was devastated to see all of the beautiful plants and flowers withering away right before our eyes.

We left immediately before more damage could be done, after taking a sample back with us. Upon further inspection we found Humans to be phytotoxic on that particular planet. Our presence there was literally poisoning the life forms at an alarming rate! I am glad we realized something was wrong and left when we did, but it still makes me sad to think I was the cause of suffering and death to something that I hold in such reverence.

I’ve kept a leaf from one of the plants as a reminder that we aren’t the only ones in danger as we pursue these missions and strange new worlds.
