Colby sat on the blanket with his arms wrapped around Callie as she leaned back against him. They were watching the fireworks display and he had to admit that he’d never enjoyed such a simple thing in all of this life. Being here with her in this quiet place with the stars shining above them and the gentle night breeze washing over them, it reminded him of his life back in Idaho, except he was imagining what it would have been like to be sitting with her just like this all of those July 4ths in his past.
He smiled as he reached behind him and pulled out a perfectly wrapped gift from the bag he’d brought with them. As he moved his arm back around her, his lips brushed her ear as he whispered, “Happy Birthday.”
Callie turned to look at him, surprise evident on her face. She beamed, “What’s this?”
He grinned, “It’s a present, silly.”
She playfully rolled her eyes, “I know that…but you already gave me tons of presents today.”
He kissed her cheek, “I know, but this one is special. I didn’t want you to open it in front of everyone at the party.”
Callie’s eyes were now alive with curiosity as she took the box from him and eagerly tore at the wrapping. She removed the lid and her smile faded as she viewed the contents. She looked up at him and sighed, “Colby…I can’t…”
He interrupted, “Yes you can…you’ll break my heart if you don’t accept it…”
She turned to face him fully and her eyes searched his. He smiled reassuringly and reached out to gently touch her face before he took the box from her. He carefully pulled out his dog tags and met her gaze as he slipped them over her head. Instantly, her hand went to where they now rested against her and he smiled as his hands moved her hair so that it didn’t get tangled around the chain.
They were both quiet for a moment before he sighed, “You know…a lot of guys that I served with hang on to these things and wear them around, like a reminder or like they are afraid to let go. Me? I don’t need them anymore.”
His eyes softened as the corner of his mouth turned up into a half smile, “You’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me, Cal. You make me forget…you help me to put all of this behind me. You have helped me in so many ways to start the process of just letting go of all that happened - all I saw and did.”
He took a deep breath, “I put my life in your hands every day without hesitation and that’s more than I can say for any of the men that I went into battle with. No matter how much I wanted to trust them…there was still that doubt there. But not with you - never with you.”
He looked down at the ground for a moment before once again meeting her gaze, “I’m not asking you to wear them or anything…and I know this isn’t the sort of thing that a beautiful, respectable woman expects to receive on her birthday, but more than what those represent physically…I want you to know that you have me….all of me, for as long as you want me.”
He waited anxiously for her to say something…anything. What was she thinking? Had he ruined their evening together by bringing something like this into it? Finally her green eyes met his and she smiled before moving forward to embrace him. Colby wrapped his arms tightly around her and held her close. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath as he thanked God right then and there for every moment that he’d been able to spend with her and then he prayed for as many more as he could get.
When Callie pulled back, she kissed him sweetly before sighing, “I do know what this means to you and I hope you know that I am going to be here for you no matter what. I know that there are going to be days when your past comes back to haunt you and I don’t want you to be afraid to share that with me, no matter how horrible you think it might be. I want to share your life with you…and that means all of it.”
He quietly nodded, looking down at where he held her hand in his own. He took a deep breath as he sighed, “I know. I know, Cal and truthfully you’re the only person I would ever consider opening myself up to that much.”
He paused before bringing his hand up to brush her hair back behind her ear and looking into her eyes, “I love you, Cal and I can’t imagine my life without you. In fact, I spend a lot of time imagining what my life would have been like if you had been in it the whole time.”
Callie squeezed his hand and smiled, “Well, there was a reason that we needed to wait for each other. I think about it too, sometimes…imagining being your high school sweetheart and being here waiting for you when you came back from Afghanistan, but…now here we are with the rest of our lives ahead of us and so much to look forward to.”
He grinned as he leaned in to kiss her, “Yes we do…”
Colby was surprised when she deepened the kiss and he clutched at her as his head started to spin. When she finally pulled back, she smiled, “There’s just one more thing that would make my birthday perfect.”
He beamed, “Oh yeah? What’s that?”
She kissed him hungrily and whispered, “Make love to me.”
His entire body came alive at her words, but he gasped, “Here?”
She nodded, “Ever made love in a field before?”
He shook his head and she leaned closer to him, her voice lowering to a purr, “You and me, out here with the stars above us and the wind cooling our bodies…don’t tell me a boy from Idaho never imagined this…”
He groaned, “Oh, I’ve imagined it…since I had you back home with me I’ve had all sorts of ideas.”
She started unbuttoning her blouse and Colby’s mouth went dry as she asked, “Then what are you waiting for?”
In the next moment, he pressed her back onto the blanket they were sitting on and soon even the fireworks were no comparison to the magic, wonder, and power of the force of two lovers becoming one.
