Colby peeked in and smiled upon seeing that Callie was still peacefully sleeping. Even though Hannah was good about sleeping through the night already, Callie was ever on the alert, afraid that she might sleep too deeply and not hear their now month-old daughter, but Colby had talked her into taking an afternoon nap.
He quietly moved through the room and opened the door just a touch so that the sound of the ocean could drift in. He knew how she loved the sound of the ocean and what comfort it brought her and he hoped that it would help her to sleep longer. Lord knew she needed the rest.
Not only had she gone through an exhausting labor with no drugs, but since Hannah had been born, there had seemed to be an endless stream of people in and out of the house and his parents had just invited themselves to stay as long as they had liked.
Finally, neither of them had been able to take it any more and Colby had sat them down and told them that he thought if he could survive the deserts of Afghanistan, he was more than capable of taking care of his own family. He let them know that he and Callie appreciated all that they had done and all the advice they had given…but now it was time for him to have his family back.
Reluctantly, they’d gone and he had relayed the same message to everyone else and let them know that the Grangers needed some time to themselves to bond as a family…time that they had yet to be given.
He took a deep breath as he once more looked down at his sleeping wife and closed his eyes, ever thankful that he had her in his life. He pulled the sheet up over her and gently kissed her forehead before making his way out of the room and pulling the door shut behind him. He had the monitor in his hand and just as he closed the door, he heard the tiny coos of his daughter as she came awake.
He smiled brightly and listened for a moment before going to her. He entered the nursery and walked over to the crib. Hannah was squirming about, though not unhappily, flailing her tiny limbs as if still trying to figure out what to do with them. He reached down and ever-so-gently picked her up, cradling her to him. “Hello Angel…did you have a nice nap?”
He bent down and sweetly kissed her forehead as he brought her over to the changing table and talked to her quietly, soothing her as he changed her diaper, musing over how absolutely tiny it was.
When he was finished, he smiled, “There now…doesn’t that feel better?”
He once again picked her up and went into the kitchen to get some of the milk that Callie had previously pumped for just such an occasion. She was always prepared, that one…for whatever might come up. As he began warming the bottle, he looked down at Hannah and asked, “You’re going to be just like her, aren’t you? Determined, smart…beautiful…you already are beautiful, aren’t you sweet girl?”
She stretched and made a grunting sound as if agreeing with him and he tested the bottle before taking her out onto the porch and easing down into the rocker that he’d bought for Callie. He placed the soft cloth he had brought over his shoulder and then lowered the bottle to Hannah’s lips. It wasn’t what she was used to…it wasn’t her mama…but after a moment, she took the nipple into her mouth and began to suckle.
Colby softly sighed, “That’s my girl…”
He remembered vividly the first time that he’d been able to feed her. It was on Callie’s birthday and they had escaped the clutches of both sets of parents and he’d packed her a surprise picnic and they’d gone to watch fireworks together. Callie had surprised him by bringing a bottle and it was an experience that he knew he would never forget.
He slowly began to rock as he looked down at the tiny bundle in his arms. He still couldn’t believe it sometimes. He was a father. He’d never even considered being a father until Callie. Now he had a daughter and he couldn’t quite express the love that he felt for her.
For nine months, he and Callie had been patient. They had tried hard to have a baby and though it took them a while, it was more than worth the wait. They read all the right books, Callie ate all the right foods, they exercised together and went to classes together. They weren’t afraid to ask questions and Don and Emily were more than happy to answer them and so were their parents. He’d watched Callie take on that glow that only a woman with child can get and they’d experienced the magic of hearing their baby’s first heartbeat together and seeing the tiny form on the ultrasound screen.
Colby had taken special care of Callie, making sure that she had everything she needed and was as comfortable as possible. He would often rub her stomach and talk to it, letting his little daughter know that they couldn’t wait to see her. This miracle…their love for one another…had brought them this miracle and both were overjoyed.
He’d rubbed Callie’s tired feet and back, got her all the odd foods she was craving, made her tea and most importantly - had helped her as best he could through the birthing process. It was when he heard the first cry of their child that it fully hit him…this was real….he was a father. He and this beautiful woman who had honored him by becoming his wife had made a baby.
He cut the cord and then they’d cleaned off her tiny body and brought her to Callie. He remembered looking down at them…the two most important women in his life now and nearly choking as he tried to swallow the lump that had formed in this throat. Then…Callie had handed the baby to him and the first moment that he locked eyes with his daughter was one that changed his life forever.
As if reliving the moment, they locked eyes once more and he felt such pride well up inside him that he was afraid he might burst. This precious child, this young life, was dependent on him and Callie. They’d waited so long for her and he knew that they would take care of her and protect her and teach her about life and pass on to her the lessons they’d both learned. They would watch her grow into a magnificent woman (not unlike her mother).
He grinned down at her then and whispered, “I love you Hannah Mae Granger. Daddy loves you very much and don’t you ever forget that, ok?”
She was finished with her bottle then and Colby carefully burped her before taking her back inside and realizing that he was also tired. However, he didn’t want to disturb Callie. She needed sleep more than any of them. So, he stretched out on the couch with Hannah lying against his chest and within moments he heard the sound of her content breathing as she slept. She’d been changed, fed, and had spent quality time with Daddy. Now, he was also feeling content and with his hands protectively holding her, he allowed himself to drift off as well.
