Agent Carter

kath_ballantyne gave me a lot of suggestions for blog posts. A few of them I'm contemplating using on my RL writing blog thinger, but she did also suggest I talk of Agent Carter. ♥PEGGY♥

And like the cut tag suggests, there will be spoilers in here. If anyone wants to read without spoilers for White Collar and Fargo (I know, weird) let me know and I'll do that cut thing that I don't really know how to do, but will find out for you. ♥ The spoilers for Agent Carter aren't anything too specific, but yeah, there are a few plot points that might be being discussed.

Marvel, as a whole, is a fandom that I adore beyond reason (except I still haven't gotten into Agents of Shield). I see all the movies, enjoy all the gif sets, read a great deal of meta people write about it on Tumblr. I love every actor involved in it and often seek them out in their other ventures and daydream RPS scenarios in my head. What I don't do is read or create fanfic, formulate theories or delve too deep into subtext and overarching theme, motif and the like myself. I also don't read the comics, though I have thought of it, I just have comic book issues that I need to work past first. I think the main reason I like all the Marvel so much is because it's fun and doesn't require too much from me.

Then along comes Peggy Carter.

Not that the show isn't fun--it is. Incredibly so. It's just that this time, I want to read (and write) all the fics (especially when I just now realized there were NONE of the fics that I most wanted to read), I want to tear it apart and suck each delicious bone of the meta I can savor. I just want to fall into Peggy's capable arms and stay there forever... *sigh*

Alas, time and obligations.

So, instead, I just figured I'd list all the many things I loved about this show and maybe a bit of why and see where we go. Maybe not the most meta and thought provoking of posts, but still, a million times more so than any other of the Marvel Universe for me.

♥ Historically accurate feminism and Girl!Power-- I love that Peggy Carter is a major ass-kicker and I adore that one of the main villains was as well (and how much did I love that the psycho in this was also the psycho in White Collar!! I wonder if she's afraid of typecasting ♥ Though, tbh, how cool of a typecast would that be? THE COOLEST!) I also loved that they were the exception and not the rule. Not that all the woman weren't incredible characters that I'd love to see more of, but just that they were all well rounded products of their time. Few things bother me more than a whole cast of characters that totally disregard the world in which they live and the sexism, classism and racism that existed. This show just felt so right from the set design and costumes to the harassed waitress and the home for women being run by a prude tyrant. ♥♥

♥ The Boys-- From the first episode, it was pretty much perfect, but somehow each episode got better and better. I realized about half way through why I thought that. It was the boys. If they had stayed a group of ape!people who grunted orders and belittled Peggy while also continuing to overlook her and her many fine abilities I probably still would have watched (honestly, that first episode that was what I enjoyed the most, that they were SO VERY WRONG), but I wouldn't have enjoyed it nearly the same. But, like I said, about half way through and I was reminded--oddly--of a song from Mary Poppins (shut up, I ♥ that movie!).

We're clearly soldiers in petticoats
And dauntless crusaders for woman's votes
Though we adore men individually
We agree that as a group they're rather stupid!
Cast off the shackles of yesterday!
Shoulder to shoulder into the fray!
Our daughters' daughters will adore us
And they'll sing in grateful chorus...

I just started to think this was like the blueprint for this show. ♥ I loved that we got to know each of these men individually and saw a little of why they were like they were, or saw a bit of their humanity even if it meant that shortly after they would be gakked. I started to care about them. I still don't really ship her with any of them (or any of the girls tbh, though I do love that there are more femslash stories at Ao3 then any other ♥Cartinelli♥) even if we are hinted that she and her spouse are the ones who form what is now SHIELD.

I don't really ship anyone with anyone. Not really. I mean, I want all the Jarvis & Peggy platonic cuddle fics, and maybe even some Jarvis and Howard domesticity shenanigans. But mostly just gen on all of this. But that does lead me to my next love of the show.

♥ Howard Stark and Edwin Jarvis-- Seriously, I would watch a show about each of them, together or individually. Firstly, I just love the entire Stark family beyond reason. ♥ And I loved how very much "Like Father, Like Son" it all is. Just so much Tony in that Howard. ♥♥ with the bravado and the womanizing but also with the genius and the heart of gold bits. *sigh* And Jarvis... sweet, sweet Jarvis. I don't have the words to fully articulate just what that man and all he represents, all his very being alludes to means to me--which I guess, being who I am, says a great deal--I just... he's perfect.

♥ That it was a story told well and to completion in 10 amazing episodes. Not that I wouldn't mind more, wouldn't devour episode after episode, or not that there weren't some questions not answered, some back story not fully realized, but just... I am satisfied with the story they told. It was a bit like Fargo like that, although, unlike Fargo, they did leave a little wiggle room for possible continuations, especially right there in the end--HOLY SHIT! Don't even ask me what they're going to do with season 2 of Fargo now that most of the people are pretty much dead.

♥ Haley Atwell-- I'm sure it goes without saying, but just incase, Peggy is really the reason you watch this show. I mean, obviously, right? The rest of those things I love? I love them because they are at a level that deserve to have Peggy in their lives, they are at a level that is deserved of the person that is Peggy Carter. Any lesser storylines, characters, relationships and settings would be an insult to the greatness that is Ms. Carter. And a great deal of that is because of the amazing of Hayley Atwell. How is there a person so perfectly fitted for that role? I mean, she LOOKS like she's straight out of pin up for the 1950s, doesn't she? Not that she's not versatility sexy... I mean, she can go from this:

To these:

Like *snaps fingers* that! She really could probably do it all. And ngl, all of those looks do ~things~ to me for different reasons.

Perfection really. All around.

*lol I don't have any Agent Carter or Marvel icons at all... so yeah, you get random River Song and Sara Ellis, because, well, why not? And now I will spend the rest of the day imagining River/Peggy *sigh*

family dysfunction: stark style, jarvis is my favorite avenger, lists of loves, fandom whatnot, character analysis, i want to be peggy carter when i grow up, meta...sorta, spoilery like whoa, marvel me this, agent carter, this got out of hand, meme, television
