Her eye is red and swelling and my heart swells with it, stretching and tearing at the inside of my chest until my sternum aches and my lungs are compressed against my ribs like children cowering in a corner. I can't speak, can't make a sound save for breathless, despairing whimpers.
"Don't be so upset," she tells me. She stares in the mirror, her open eye cold and hard, brittle sea foam frozen in the bitter, frigid force of her gaze. She strokes a wet smear of slightly too-light cream across her skin. "This might as well be love."
