All Hail the Shifter King

Title: Confession Time
Word Count: 313

Note: Non-canon, from a previous version of the novel. Part of me thought that perhaps I should keep writing until at least one person made a resolution, but then I realized that they're all drinking and thus more likely to start stabbing each other than actually deciding anything. I'm also not quite sure when Ryder made the transition from drinking scotch to drinking vodka, but I'm just rolling with it.

"Alright, in all seriousness," Jordan said, chuckling as he lifted the bottle and poured a two-finger of scotch for himself and Eli. "It's New Year's Eve. We need some resolutions."

"I vote Ryder quits smoking," Katrina said.

"I vote Kat quits drinking," Ryder countered.

"I vote you fall under a gas truck and die," she snarled, and hugged her bottle of honey whiskey to her chest.

"We need to make our own resolutions," Jordan corrected. "God, do I need to separate you two again?"

"Though it couldn't hurt to quit the smoking," Eli pointed out. Ryder glared at him across the table and made a point of tapping a fresh smoke out of his case - the second he had it pinched between his lips, however, Jordan reached over and took it away from him.

"No smoking in the house," he reminded, tossing the cigarette into the garbage can behind him.

"I've killed men for less," Ryder growled, slumping back in his chair with his vodka and ice.

"It's true," Eli confirmed. "I've seen it."

"And woman," Ryder added, "put that tongue back in your face before I cut it off."

"Oh, that's a good resolution!" Katrina chirped. "You can go a whole year without killing someone!"

"You might as well ask him to quit smoking," Eli said.

"No, no, it could be a good challenge," Jordan agreed. "What do you say, Ry? New life, fresh start, perhaps no bodies that I need to bury in the back yard?"

"Maybe we should all agree not to kill anybody this year," Katrina suggested.

"Couldn't hurt," Eli said, shrugging.

"When's the last time either of you killed someone?" Jordan asked, incredulous. When the pair exchanged a guilty glance, he winced and covered his face with his hands. "Don't answer that. Just don't."

"Great exercise you have going on here, Jordan," Ryder said with a chuckle.
