Regarding Liturgy: Upcoming Changes To The Roman Catholic Mass

Jun 17, 2006 05:38

While I have stated many a time that I am not a Roman Catholic, I am an enormous fan of the liturgy. Just because I tend to disagree with a few of the tenants of Roman Catholicism on a theological level, does not by any means mean that I have problems with the entire mass. Personally I don't have any grievances against their understanding of the ( Read more... )

Your thought on outside priests not being native to the language raises a good point. I hope there's a little more care and thought put into instituting all of this stuff, hopefully with a good support structure for concerned parishoners or clergy.

“Scriptural catechesis is central to liturgical catechesis,” he said. “In using a translation that is more faithful to sacred scripture we are teaching ourselves and our people to speak 'bible.'”

this quote concerns me. what is he saying? i wonder if i am misinterpreting it.

Yeah it concerned me too, I'm not really sure what he's intending to say. Maybe something about one needs to know what is going on in the bible and the scriptural passages that get utilized during the liturgy, and therefore this translation of the liturgy to coincide with that sort of 'biblical language' is an attempt to expedite matters and make the transition smoother.

However, I don't really think that 'speaking bible' is a facet of one's ecclesial life that helps in bringing the grace of the gospel to the outside work that ... say _doesn't_ 'speak bible'.

i was afraid he was trying to say that we had to learn to speak a certain way in order to really be christian. a nd to me that's directly contradictory to the message of the gospel -- it doesn't matter what we do or say, salvation is a gift of god and it's supposed to be that simple.

i really hope i am misinterpreting. i think we agree on the necessity of "speaking bible."
