Well it seems that when I try to go online in halls my laptop no longer gets assigned an IP address, I am informed that this is neccessary, so I can't use the internet in my flat. This is highly annoying as now the only things I can do to entertain myself is read, listen to music, do non-internet based stuff on my computer (ie games and DVDs i'm ( Read more... )

I suspect I'm going to regret asking this, since the reasons given by brain-dead techies always make me want to put my head in the food mixer, but why is this necessary? It seems a bit ridiculous to offer Internet facilities and then say "IP addresses? oh, no-sirree-bob, you can't have one of those!", seeing as how they are kind of essential.

Um well the computer told me it needed an IP address and I generally assume it knows more about that than me. But it doesn't seem to be able to find/assign one (or whatever the correct term is) and says it's a fault with the network ( ... )
