REM is light sleep, when you have rapid eye movement before deeper sleep there are four or five non-REM deeper stages which are reflected in different brain waves.

Interesting thoughts, I think there's a lot to be said for dreams organising your thoughts and helping your brain make sense of things.

Ah OK. Maybe I got REM and non-REM confused, or oversimplified the idea. Or perhaps I was confused by the fact that you have to be asleep for a while before you get to REM sleep.
Still it was interesting.

Read a book from work a while ago about people who've had dreams that have indicated health problems. Often they weren't obvious until after diagnosis but a couple caused people to go to the doctors. The logic was usually a bit strange, fairly lateral. For example one man kept dreaming about being in tunnel or sewer full of crabs. Turned out he had colonic cancer.

Also if you're a dick (or a psychologist) you can stick a scanner on someone and wake them up every time they go into REM sleep to see what happens to them. (The delay between falling asleep and entering REM sleep gets shorter and they come to hate you)

I suppose the next step is to see whether the hatred generated under such circumstances can withstand Stockholm syndrome. After all if someone didn't volunteer for that you'd probably have to be holding them captive.
