As the old man in Monty Python and The Holy Grail said, "I'm not dead yet."

I may not be blogging here like I used to, maybe again someday, but I'm still out there active online. I participate a lot on the TiVo Facebook fan page and I still maintain the TiVoCentral Yahoo Group and TiVo Lovers LJ Community. Anyway, as a result of my participation ( Read more... )

Nifty - thanks! I didn't see my one wish on there, though.

I just got a TiVo HD XL (for cheap, thanks to a recent tip here about a Woot sale) to go with my new TV. I like that I can use the TiVo remote to change my TV's source (the S2 remote couldn't do that), but with my TV (Samsung), it then leaves the source select menu up, and I have to go find the TV remote to exit the menu. Perhaps I can use a TiVo remote button to clear the menu, but if so, I haven't figured out which one. Pressing the source button again just moves through the source list, and all the other likely remote buttons I've tried affect the TiVo, not the TV.

Unfortunately the TV Input button is designed to basically go "Next Input, Next Input, etc". That works for most TVs - including my Samsung - but some manufacturers annoyingly open a menu for Input and then you have to highlight and select the correct one. Which I find irritating because it is more steps and slower than just clicking on one button to the right one. I suppose if you have every input in use on a large TV so it is a long list it might be useful - but those kind of users are the same ones most likely to have an AV receiver handling the input switching.

So the unfortunate answer is there is no way to do this with the TiVo remote - not that I know of anyway. I'd look into the IR codes your TV uses - maybe it has another IR code that just does the 'next input' function without needing select. If so then you might be able to set the TiVo remote to use that code set instead.
