Via Simon Willison: Found in Space identifies what part of the night sky your flickr photo is looking at. Which is pretty darn cool.

Even better, they have a link to a paper describing the scale and rotation invariant hashing algorithm[PDF] they used.

Truly, that is seriously awesome.

I either dreamed about or actually read about someone who had used this sort of idea to do rough geolocation of photos in the daytime as well. There's something about a daytime-visible moon in the photo making geolocation much simpler, but I forget what/how/why/if it's not a dream.

I actually remember hearing something about that too. I want to say I saw it slashdot(well, actually, I don't want to claim I saw it there :) ). Computer vision has always been an interest, but I've never taken the time to read up on the subject. Of course, I doubt this will be the beginning of that goal either. Oh well.
