just another dimestore novel

I've found some pretty good books recently, new and second-hand, at discount prices. My favourite used-book store has a shelf for books that have been marked down to low low prices. These books are non-returnable and the covers have been punched with a little hole so the owner will be able to identify them if you try to sneak them back. From ( Read more... )

i didn't like cambridge.

i would love to know what annoys you about alice walker's style- the only books of hers that i genuinely like are color purple and meridian, but i find her too "70s feminist academic," overall.

ps
wheeeeeeeeeee, n00 mac!!!

I read Crossing the River by the same author and liked it so I thought I'd give something else by him a try. What did you not like about Cambridge?

Alice Walker... I don't know. I read some of her essays/non-fiction last year and even though it was annoying me, I found that I still wanted to keep reading. I know exactly why it is her style annoys me, but I can't put it into words - she's kind of smug and self-satisfied in her essays, which bugs me, and I haven't been able to finish any of her novels apart from the two you mentioned. Her novels are kind of heavy-handed and earnest and just... annoying.

i read it twelve years ago, when it came out, so all i remember is i found it super dry and unbelievable.

i pretty much feel the same way about alice walker. it's like she picks basic scenarios that tackle BIG, IMPORTANT ISSUES and she lays them out in a very didactic fashion. like, we get the point and we realize it's a very feminist one!

oh, and... do you write down the 50 books you want to read or do you have an amazon wishlist? that's the only way i remember the books i want to read- whenever i hear about a book that sounds interesting, i'll add it to my wishlist.

That's what I do too. And now that I've realised that I get to have multiple wishlists, so I can categorise my to-read list - I love that kind of thing. My wishlist would be half the size were it not for the Amazon recommendation/similar items features; those things work on me like magic.
