Setting: Office.
I'm cleaning my new philodendron with banana peels while eating the banana. (Don't ask why this works, but it does, for most non-fuzzy houseplants--you can polish the leaves with the inside of banana peels. I don't remember what green/hippie website I picked it up from, but I'm terribly self-conscious that I look a bit...eccentric ( Read more... )

OK, see, right there...there's a scientist looking at me funny for it.

You don't understand, it's an extremely OCD office in some aspects. And I brought in this plant that was potted up nicely, but still had a bunch of gunk (I presume some residue from whatever they spray on plants at Mahoney's) on the leaves, making them look unhealthy. Didn't fit the rest of the office. So...yeah.
Wanted 'em to look shinier.
Don't look at me like I'm turning all Dr. Jekyll and Ms. Stewart on you.

i'm not sure if i saw it i would have looked at you funny for it. but the concept of it occurring to anyone that the leaves of their plant were insufficiently shiny is for some reason completely boggling to me.
(i am very bad at paying attention to plants. leading to my utter black thumb...)

Most OCD clean things are like that to me: "Why would you even notice that, never mind care??" But I do have certain pockets of fussiness.

But that has nothing to do with plant care, really. Totally separate things. Making plants thrive requires balancing caring enough to pay attention without overfussing (and hence overwatering, for instance)...and I've yet to fully get that.
