Isn't Hermione older by a little bit (I'm thinking of the Disapparition lessons) - so she might be of age by this point? Because one of the points of Harry coming of age is so that he can do magic without being noticed - I think that must be what's up with Hermione.

And no, this book wouldn't be easy for the younger kids! Thankfully the ones who started reading HP when it began are old enough to cope with this, but not the young'uns.

You're right, NK. I had just convinced myself that the detection of underage magic was location-based, and the introduction of the Trace seemed rather belated and ad hoc. But maybe I fabricated that impression, or got it from fandom. Will have to check the Lexicon.

I did like the tension created by not knowing how they were being tracked by the Death Eaters, though I was a little dissatisfied right up till the end that resistance to the fear of using the name became just a plot device. Glad Harry struck one last blow for the right side on that. Indeed, what I like best about Harry in this book is his willingness to call things exactly as he sees them.

Such a relief to know that I'm not the only one who wishes that Pensieve would get shattered or something!

I thought it was Sybil, too! In some ways, I almost wish it were (if only because adding Thompson into the mix of actors would be interesting -- albeit that the text doesn't give her much to do).
