She noticed. Of course she noticed. She strolled over, brow arched. "Transfixed by my beauty?"
By you. The thought rang true, stilling all others. It balanced on the edge of speaking. Caught behind his lips.
She watched, expectantly, sharp retort presaged by her lively eyes.
Hastily he said, "I believe you have something in your teeth."
She swept away in an indignant whirl of hair and skirts. He watched her leave over the rim of his cup, wine bitter on his tongue, and cursed himself for a coward.
