A/N: Title lifted from Edmund Burke: "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." Not that Uther is evil, exactly . . . but you'll see.



On the first morning, the downpour is coincidence. Uther has the execution delayed.

By the third morning, his suspicions are roused and he takes to shouting. The servants hide. Gaius, unable to tell Uther he knows the storm is natural, stays out of the way by tending to the infant. Besides, this is his duty.

On the fifth morning, the rain hisses as it spatters into the desultory flames. The wood is wet and the burn is slow, but the young king doesn't seem to care. He and Gaius watch until it is done.

And it is only the first.
