Apologies for idiocy... tiriel_35 July 8 2006, 11:07:54 UTC
I realised (at last) that in a recent chapter I succumbed to a blind spot which resulted in a serious canon error; the kind that makes you use one word when you actually mean another and is so ridiculous, obvious and unbelievable that you miss it entirely until its stupidity strikes you so hard you want to squirm back into the mud from whence you came.

*sighs* *wails*

*scatters ash thickly through hair and over unflattering sackcloth*
(so not my colour, but strict adherence to ritualistic detail vital to comprehensive expiation)
Corrected now, but if you should find other instances that I still haven’t seen, please tell me. Being a detail freak (you noticed?) I am most grateful to anyone prepared to support my addiction; correction of gaffes is always welcome (sorry, couldn’t resist!)

Goodness me, indeed! Yikes. That was certainly vivid!

(And I was just day before yesterday thinking of GAFFS, and wondering when the next update would arrive. Little did I know--!)

*snrk* at the pun in your comment above. *g*

Thank you! I’m glad I made it work for you - would have fallen sooo flat otherwise! It’s Pippin who has caused recent delay (my excuse & I use Araldite) - for the next chapter too. The pertinent part is written, if not tweaked to acceptability yet; but Pippin wrote himself both awake and asleep when F&S finally succumb to their separate wearinesses - each has its merits and I can’t decide which works best!

And I have always had a weakness for puns… Thanks Xylo!

I had to look up Araldite (Google is my friend!)--but I think I grasp the meaning now.

Somehow, pertinent seems like precisely the right word.

You could always post the version you decide you like better, and then post the other version as well, separately--as a kind of bonus.

Ah, but that would mean that I would have to write both to completion (and in this case, it isn't completion that's the problem...) and then tweak each into submission - and once is enough, really it is! (Though, if the problem gets bad enough, I may have to do the write/tweak anyway, to have any hope of making a decision. (Decision and I have never been natural bedfellows, and it gets worse as I get older. *sigh*)

Yay for Google, yet again! (Do you too have a feeling of total betrayal on the very rare occasion that it can't find what you need? I think I need a support group.)

Oh my. That's - wow. People are crazy.

Very happy to see new GAFFS appear! I look forward to more.

I suspect it may take those possessed of a Y chromosome to achieve that kind of craziness, for more reasons than one!

Thank you, Melandry - I’m hoping the next chapter will decide asap how it wants to end!

Excellent, my dear! I've been hoping to see a new chapter of GAFFS. ‘Could 'a’ bin a wicked waste of a willy, though!’ *snerk* Good thing it wasn't either of our two favorite 'willies' (they'll be needing them soon, I hope!).

in a recent chapter I succumbed to a blind spot which resulted in a serious canon error Ummm, what was the error and which chapter? I have previous chapters saved on my pc, and I don't recall reading anything that caught my attention. Canon error-wise, that is...

Thank you! They will indeed be requiring the services of their own valuables before too long, though sadly solo situations only, as yet. (The format of this tale has not changed since its initiation as a one shot - it has simply… expanded - just a trifle - here and there!)

Ah. I never thought of anyone saving it - thank you so much for wanting to! Does this mean that I have ‘to fess up? *deep breath* Although obviously, albeit temporarily, non compos mentis at the time the felony was committed, I really do know the difference between the wife of the Thain-to-be and his sister (wife of the Master-to-be of Buckland)... I typed Esme when I meant Eglantine in 15 - Oh, the shame of it! *scatters a few more ashes for good measure*

Still, how reassuring that my exposition of small-boy-at-show was interesting enough to deflect your attention so thoroughly - I feel just a fraction less stupid now! Thank you, Hildi!

Ah. I never thought of anyone saving it - thank you so much for wanting to! Of course, I have all your stories saved. I convert everything into word docments and change to a readable font. I typed Esme when I meant Eglantine in 15 *blushes* I did actually notice that when I was converting into word, but I knew who you meant (and that it was actually a typo on your part), so I corrected it before I saved it.

I really do love this story, T, and I'm looking forward to reading all about about those important 'valuables' soon.

How interesting - what do you find to be a readable font? I know my lj page shows 12pt, but currently, I write in Verdana 10pt - black, with purple for re-thinks (green for re-thought re-thinks; the latter being downgraded to pale grey to allow the re-use of purple for the inevitable re-re-...); though the step up in font size seems inevitable, shortly - either that or new specs. And the font would definitely be cheaper. I used to use Bookman Old Style (always green) until its rigidity seemed at odds with the increasingly... lax? indolent? innuendo-laced? sex-obsessed? direction of my stories. And TNR simply doesn't do for me at all - costive and niggardly in the extreme. I find 10pt Ariel - font of choice for so many - uneccessarily secretive (not to mention illegible - see specs, above), and some of my favourite fonts for icons and whatnot (Gigi, Hurricane, MtC, Papyrus, Ringbearer, ( ... )

okay, you usually give us notes about actuall events and all such so... did they really do stuff like this? I know the lads get up to some strange things, but I would think putting 'the little lad' in this kind of danger beyond even them.

Cute though, Frodo's reaction to the contest. <3
Excellent chapter as usual.

Hi, Breon! The answer is that I can’t say it happens, but I can't say it doesn't! I live in the same county as the man in the link - Yorkshire where, amongst other traits, folk have a propensity for seeing just how far they can pull someone’s leg (you thought I was going to say something else, there, didn’t you??); also the unshakeable conviction that, if a thing can be done at all, then a Yorkshireman can do it - this is, after all, God's Own County! It’s also a place where men pride themselves on being Men and thinking nothing of a 5 mile walk for a pint at the local, in a blizzard wearing street clothes (and flat cap), and maybe not even noticing that it's ‘a bit brisk out theer t’neet!' (Well, maybe that's more how they used to be, once upon a time!) So, the Yorkshire character is/was made for such pointless bravado, and I have to say that if it happens/happened, it is/was probably around here somewhere!

But belleferret actually keeps ferrets and knows more about them than I ever will. She has the proper explanation for how the myth ( ... )
