sometimes I think I'm just pretending that I actually understand or really learn anything from books.

I think there's a difference between reading a book for pleasure and reading a book in the expectation of learning something from it. I constantly wondered, throughout my English A2, whether the authors of the books we studied ever wrote their works for the purpose of analysis. I think it's probably fair to say they did not.
