All right, I have no problem with het, canon or fandom. I really don't. Generally speaking. It's what is done with the het that drives me insane

I'd started to think of myself as a convert to a slash-only shipper in fandom, but then when I started watching Fairy Tail (anime), I suddenly found a cast I really wanted to read het fanfic of, because there were so many diverse, charged relationships filled with all sorts of unresolved tension. Only to dive into the fandom and discover how fanfic had made these unique and interesting female characters mere shadows of their canon selves. The guys, on the other hand, seemed to make the jump more or less intact.
It doesn't even make that much sense. The vast majority of fanfic writers are girls. You'd think we would be less susceptible to watering down our own gender.

It's very rare to find a fandom that ships het without the whole weeping!female syndrome. Ugh.
I ran into the second problem in some SGA fics that pair Teyla (kick ass alien warrior princess) with Sheppard. A lot of fics (mostly on ff.net) tend to make Teyla be not so tough for everything that isn't literally kicking a bad guy's (or a friend in a sparring match) ass with her bantos sticks. For a fandom with so many awesome, kick ass female characters it made me go D:. I have found a few good fics though, luckily.
This is probably the main reason why I read slash most of the time, even when I might actually like a het pairing in canon. (Stargate is pretty much the only !verse where my OTPs are both het and canon--even if in one case they but the clip from the episode where it was admitted...it is there in deleted scene form! And in the other it's in the books post cancellation.)
As usual, though, the awesomeness of the slash fanfiction means I read about a 99:1 ratio of fics slash:het though.
I stick with slash mostly for my own sanity. Some of these het relationships look awesome until you delve into their fandom. Are we even watching the same show? Do strong females scare you? Maybe that's why Twilight is so popular...
I avoided Twilight from the moment I heard about it because I knew what the fandom would end up being like in regards to the main female character (Bella?). I did watch the movies, but then my cousin and I have a "you can't call it stupid/mock it without seeing it" when it comes to movies policy. That and she was pregnant (is again now) and her hubby was in Iraq so I took her out to the movies to cheer her up.
