1) Most boring bit first: My headcanon is that Dean is actually part of a bloodline that's not just a vessel bloodline but one of mutability. Meaning, not everyone can be a vessel, a vampire, Death and a god -- he has some really remarkable DNA going on, and he is basically The Empty Vessel that the whole universe is trying to bend to its will.
2) Originally, the story had the title "Potential," and I was going to go really deep into the mythology behind how it was that Gabriel could be an archetype that was alive although him as a person was technically dead. I actually kept the original opening to the fic, which was very Wheel of Time-y --
At the beginning of the world, there were no gods or humans. There were no planets or stars. There was not even space. There was the absence of anything, a hole where the universe ought to be. But from holes, from the absence of things, springs potential. And potential is never content untapped ( ... )

So they're now in suits. In black suits with ties, brandishing FBI badges, standing in front of a police station. Somehow, when Dean thought of learning to become a Trickster, he never imagined this.
