Do we do the things we do because we believe it is the right thing to do, or do we do the things we do because we believe its the things other people expect is the best thing for us to do?
Latter, if it's the first option it's because it's only our own influence and nobody else really knows about what you've done. When we try to defend ourselves with a mistake more often then not we will generally try to explain that it is in their best interests.
It's way more complex then that and this is a very broad question I must admit though.....
