On being German

Not a day has gone by in the past 12 years when I did not hear the name 'Hitler' or the term 'Nazi'. Ever since I moved to this country, I have ever repeatedly been reminded of the past of my country of birth. Despite all the wonderful and amazing things that can pop into your head, you mention Germany to any (non-european) person and most likely the first thing that will pop into their head will be Hitler.

While Australia tends to pride itself of being a nation that values multiculturism highly, we dont' actually bother to learn too much about other cultures and the average person couldn't tell you much more about Germany then Hitler and possibly Oktoberfest if you're lucky.

It's pretty horrible, at the same time, count yourself lucky you're not from the middle east..........
