Archive The warm night clung to him in a sticky embrace, beading sweat onto his face to cool his scorching skin. But Dongwoon didn’t want to cool down. He wanted the heat to engulf his insides melting the frost that froze his blood rendering his limbs useless, shivering as he staggered after his quarry.
Yoseob slipped into a winding alley of the hilly neighbourhood and he wanted to shout for the boy to stop. A part of his brains struggled to issue the command and when it registered, the rasp that came from his mouth scraped his throat raw.
It hurts. So was breathing, his heart constricting painfully with every breath he took. The world spun around him while white spots danced before his eyes. Even then, he didn’t stop, ploughing on and dragging his rubbery legs up the steep steps. Blurry sight focused with tremendous effort onto the boy who had stopped at the top of the stairs smiling brightly at him before flouncing away.
He had to catch up to him. To the boy who was always ahead of him. To the one who only came when Dongwoon was in the direst of state, beckoning him to get closer. But the distance never seems to close in no matter how he tried.
And there was that smile again. Perfect white teeth gleaming in the moonlight portrayed in silent laughter. He held out a hand to Dongwoon but didn’t receive it because he knew Yoseob was going to pull back and the boy did, laughing that cheeky laugh as he darted into a lone building.
This was where he had first met him and he smiled, feet stumbling after with newfound energy to where salvation was. He could stop chasing now - should have never chased because it was like trying to catch smoke. The taste of pursuit so exquisite that one couldn’t get enough and when you thought you have it in your clutches. It curled right through your fingers.
Dongwoon watched the white wisp of smoke snaking a pattern in front of him mingling with the sooty stream of a flickering candle. It stung his eyes and they burned with unshed tears. Physical relief could never last long and before he knew it, he was plunging back into the depths of hell.
Terrible knowledge wreaked havoc within him. Memories flickered to life from time to time but the most lucid and the one that ate him whole was of Yoseob. Dear little Yoseob lying still with empty eyes staring at him and foaming in the mouth.
A chocked sob escaped him. His hand trembled as he held onto a piece of aluminium foil. The orange flame licked its underside cooking the white powder on it dissipating into pungently sweet white smoke. He’s going to chase the dragon now. Riding the white beast to outrun his nightmares and if he was lucky enough, the fires of hell would incinerate his pain into nothing.
