Tandia, by Bryce Courteney. I'm utterly obsessed with his books, and Tandia tells the story of a young soldier girl who falls in love with the enemy, a white man. It's amazingly told, and definitely NOT the "stereotype" of interracial romance and strife. unbelievable book.

Because it's where I belong. There's no other possible explanation for my stupidity, other than that. I know what goes on there, I know the battle of locals vs. outsiders, the discrimination, everything. i'm not blinded enough to believe it'll be different in my case, nor am I naive enough to believe I'll really be accepted. In fact, I mostly side with the locals on the battle of their territory.

Strong, independent people inspire me. It doesn't take much, I'm cynical but I'm also hopeful enough to find inspiration and kindness in almost everything I see. The ten year old kid who holds open a door for somebody, that inspiresme. The teenager who offers up his seat to an elderly person on the bus, that inspires me. My best friend Corky inspires me constantly, because she's so full of GOOD that it's just astounding. She'll go out on a limb for somebody she barely knows, just because she wants to. She talks to everyone, and she even bought the janitor at her work lunch one time, because he looked down. It made his week.
2. who's your hero?My dad is my hero. He grew up in a terrible home--his father was orphaned so he never knew his heritage and had a tough life, and he ended up taking a lot of it out on his children. My dad was beaten as a kid a lot, he grew up in an abusive home where his mother just turned a blind eye to everything. They were the poorest of poor, too. My dad's brother grew up to be a joke ( ... )

Discombobulated. Come on, how can you not at least CHUCKLE when you hear that word? It's magnificent in all of it's implications.

Is it sad that I didn't even have to LOOK at the book to quote it? Anyway, The Fellowship of the Ring. I memorized that passage when i was all of 9, and have almost lived by it ever since.

Ambers. I LOVE ambers! My friend Joyce once worked in a jewelry shop that ONLY sold amber pieces. I went insane.
