Oh, this has been stewing in the back of my head since I first saw this picture and its companion by Katsari-Chan on dev-art.  It was finally brought to a boil during the recent Zutara meme run by a_twisted_vine, when someone requested background fic on the above.  Additional inspiration was provided by this picture by Melimsah.

The Firebending Masters was one of my FAVORITE ZUKO MOMENTS EVER and the way you have written this--so beautifully done, digging into the meat of his bending, but also keeping Zuko and Katara so in-character and best-friends-y and the unspoken trust me and him sharing this with her and AAAAAAAAAAAAH THIS FIC IS SO GOOD. *waves hands inarticulately with joy*

Wow! Thanks for all the compliments; it's great to hear you thought they were in character. I adored your Zutara Week fics (haven't reviewed them yet *feels ashamed for letting fandom down*), so it's extra nice that you liked it.

And yes, Firebending Masters is a pretty kick *ss episode--I'm kind of sad they didn't do more with the colored fire in the show. It's so pretty :D
