I think he'd be supported by magic, and left only a few remnants of his mind.
The whole brain or halfbrain thing confused the hell out of me, so I'll stick to the assumption that maybe the brain in the castle was a container to keep the important parts of the advisors brain alive.
Maybe they let him live because if he died, his brain would die too... magic, but maybe he still has some sort of connection with it? Something fuzzy and distant. Though if that were the case you'd think they'd keep a better eye on him and not just let him wander around the O.Z....
