Table of Contents Wyatt found Zero asleep, his daughter in his arms. Well, he figured that was his daughter, she was asleep too. Looked a little like him. He poked Zero. Actually, it was less a poke, more of a stab. He damned near broke his finger. It woke Zero up though and Zero's eyes took a couple of seconds before focussing on Cain. "Hmmph. Mines ready yet?"
Wyatt shrugged. "Another meeting." He looked at the girl who had decided the best way to respond to the sudden movement was to nestle into Zero's arms even further. "Your daughter?"
Zero brushed a finger along her arm. "Yeah. Brenda," his disapproval of the name clear. "Her mother's mother's name. I mean... girl's names should be, ya know, feminine?"
Wyatt thought on this. "You could call her Rennie." Zero dismissed that with a snort. "Ok, Bre?"
"Bre," Zero nodded slowly. "Yeah... I like that."
"I don't suppose you were really a part of her life before."
"Her mother was in the Resistance," Zero confirmed. "I could hardly stop by."
Wyatt shook his head thoughtfully, wondering how they would have gotten together and then immediately froze that train of thought before it arrived somewhere where he really didn't want to be. "Where is she?"
Zero frowned. "I'm not sure..." he looked down at Brenda. "I should get Bre..." he smiled at the name. "I should get her to the tutors. The Queen's allowed it."
"She's going to be taught by the pooch?"
Zero hesitated, placing who might that be. "Uh, no. No magic." He whispered to his daughter. "Brenda? Sweetheart, you've got to wake up."
Brenda protested again, but woke up after a second, blue eyes, definitely her father's, looking up at both men. "Hi," she said to Wyatt, a little fearful.
"Uh, Bre? This is Wyatt Cain. He helped kill the Witch."
"Hi," Wyatt smiled, warming to the girl.
"Hi. Where's Mom?"
"Not back yet. I was going to take you to classes."
Brenda looked terrified. "Will Mommy find me?"
"We took a tour, remember?" he brought a hand to her short hair. "Mommy already knows where you'll be, ok?"
"Ok." She took her father's hand and slipped off the bed.
Wyatt went to the door and opened it, waving them through. "Milady."
Brenda boggled at him. "Ok." Keeping on the other side of Zero, they stepped through the door. Wyatt closed the door behind them.
"So, Brenda, tell me about yourself."
Her head dropped immediately. "Um, I'm seven?" she told her chest.
"Bre, honey, hold yourself up when you talk," Zero chided but he had to suppress a laugh. He was just like that as a kid. Shy as all get out.
Brenda looked up at her. "Bre?" she thought about that a second before shrugging. "Bre."
"Seven, huh?" Wyatt brought up the subject again. "Some age. I got into all sorts of trouble."
"Really?" Zero asked him with a smirk.
Wyatt rolled his eyes before Bre answered the remark. "Mom keeps me outta trouble. Trouble's bad."
"Well, yeah, trouble's bad. If it's bad trouble. 'People... get hurt' kinda trouble."
"You know a lot about that," she replied.
"Yeah, I do. I know a lot about that. But also, there's the other kind of trouble. I mean, the kind where nobody gets hurt and all that happens is Mom and Dad is a little mad. It's the fun kinda trouble. Like searching for the most perfect apple when the trees kinda get angry with ya."
"Why do the trees get angry?"
"They likes them apples," Wyatt replied. It was Zero's turn to roll his eyes. "Looks like we've arrived."
Bre let out a whine. Zero bent to eye-level. "Trust me, the other kids will love you and you'll forget all about us stuffy, aged, old fogeys."
Bre pushed out her breath in frustration. "Fine."
Zero bounced up. "Great! Greatness!" He opened the door to the classroom where half the students were already there. "Have a great day, Sweetness."
"Yeah, fine."
