When I was a kid, I was keen on reading movie novelisations, the main reason being that we couldn't afford to go see all the movies I wanted to see, but a book back in the 70s and 80s was much more affordable. Besides, I could play the movie in my head when I read the book, so I got essentially the same experience, if not a better one that movie-

As to the visual effects, I'd go so far as to say that they're not antiquated so much as antique. In 1982 it was cutting edge, state-of-the-art graphics technology with a $17m budget, after all. They may not have had a lot to work with in those days, but they were at the top of their craft nonetheless.

What frightens me is given Disney's penchant for screwing things like this up, Tron2 will not get the loving treatment it rightfully deserves, and will just result in being another franchise they'll rape for a ride idea in five years.
I would love to be wrong. Fantasia 2000 does show Disney can treat a legend with love and respect.
However, Disney's track record on this is appalling.
