Title: I Don’t Want To Live On The Moon
Summary: Richard sings Jason to sleep...
Author’s Notes: Set at the end of the movie, between the hospital scene and the Superman/Jason bonding scene. Interesting story, this was an attempt to start my first challenge over at sr_slash. There were actually a few takers.

(Oh, and on the very slim chance you’re reading this... yeah, I got the song idea from you. But it fits really well, and you don’t own the Sesame Street.)

I Don't Want To Live On The Moon

“Time for bed munchkin, did you brush your teeth?” Richard lifted Jason and began to carry him up the stairs.

“Uh-huh…” Jason nodded, curling into the side of Richard’s neck. “Daddy? Why are you carrying me?”

“What? Didn’t I always used to carry you?” Richard hoped Jason was still too young to know when someone was avoiding a question. He was pretty bright for his age.

“That was when I was little. I can do the stairs now.” The munchkin sounded almost cross at the implication he needed help, and pulled back to look at Richard directly.

He sighed. “You’re right kiddo, you’re not little anymore. Soon you’re going to be too big for-” don’t say Daddy, you have no right, not anymore,“-me to pick up.”

Seemingly mollified, Jason slumped back onto his shoulder.

The reached the top of the stairs and down the hall to the room across from the one Richard would not be sharing with Lois tonight, nor perhaps ever again.

It was a brief struggle to open the door, followed by carefully picking a path around the toys that lay scattered on the floor, but Richard didn’t put Jason down. He walked slowly, fighting for every second.

But eventually, as always, covers were pulled back and the little body was carefully deposited on the bed and securely tucked in. Richard, not quite ready to leave, roamed around picking up toys and making sure the night light was bright enough.

“I saw Superman today.”

“Did you?” He replied absently, latching the window with more force than was strictly necessary.

“He was sleeping. I…” There was an obvious tremor in his voice. “I don’t think he’ll wake up.”

Richard rushed over to his side. “Come on now little man. You-we don’t know that. Sometimes it takes a while to get better.” Smoothing the hair back from Jason’s face, he continued. “Remember when you had a really bad flu, and you were sick for a whole week?”

Jason nodded, seeming unsure. “So… he will get better?” Eyes asking for reassurance. To do the impossible, and chase away the ugly truths of life.

“We have to hope so.” He leaned down and kissed Jason on the forehead. “Don’t worry about it tonight, okay? Happy dreams?” He started to rise when his arm was seized painfully tight. Richard looked down, surprised to see the grip was Jason’s.

Jason loosened his hold, just a little. “Stay with me… just for a little bit?”

“Okay… okay…” Richard pried himself out of the still painful grasp. “Would you, um,” Tried to find a place to sit without dislodging Jason. “Like me to sing to you?” Jason nodded frantically.

It had been a while since Richard had sung to him. Almost a month. One thing after another getting in the way. You never realize how many moments you waste, until the day when you realize your time is almost up.

Jason looked up at him with expectant eyes, and Richard smiled in a way he hoped was reassuring, and started to sing.

“Well, I’d like to visit the moon
On a rocket ship high in the air
Yes, I’d like to visit the moon
But I don’t think I’d like to live there
Though I’d like to look down at the earth from above
I would miss all the places and people I love
So although I might like it for one afternoon
I don’t want to live on the moon.“

Jason’s eyelids were fighting to stay open. Not long now...

“So if I should visit the moon
Well, I’ll dance on a moonbeam and then
I will make a wish on a star
And I’ll wish I was home once again
Though I’d like to look down at the earth from above
I would miss all the places and people I love
So although I may go I’ll be coming home soon…”

Jason was asleep. Richard leaned forward and kissed him on the forehead. “Because I don’t want to live on the moon.“ He whispered the last line, then sat back and considered the sleeping form.

He didn’t want to lose him, this precious thing that was never his. But someday, Jason would fly off. Looking down at Jason’s face, untroubled in sleep, Richard knew he was destined for far greater things then Richard or even Lois could ever give him. Jason deserved a chance to look down at the earth from above, and it wasn’t Richard’s place to try and stop him. He could only hope, someday, he’d come home.

He quietly got up and unlocked the window.
