“I don’t know if I can do this,” B’Elanna spoke as she stared into the mirror. She moved her fingers across her forehead while tears pooled in her eyes.
Chakotay placed his hand on her shoulder, “B’Elanna, I’m here for you. I’ll help you through this.”
B’Elanna turned to face the man who was her greatest friend, most trusted confidant, and yet the man she feared the most...especially now. She was fully human, at least for the next few days, and her emotions couldn’t have run any higher than under these circumstances.
She had a crush on him. She understood this in the deepest part of her human psyche, but her Klingon half had buried that tidbit deep enough to stop any action on her part. But for now, she was completely human...a fact that didn’t escape her heart and its yearnings.
“That’s part of the problem, Chakotay,” She replied as she moved away from him and took a seat on the sofa. She took a deep breath, “I’m not sure if I can do this with you, but I know that I damn sure can’t do this without you.”
Chakotay looked at her strangely for a moment, confused about her admission. He approached her and sat beside her on the sofa, “I don’t understand.”
She tucked her feet under her and shifted to face him, “You know that you’re the person I trust most on this ship.”
“Yes,” He nodded, “And I’m honored.”
She smiled slightly, “When she’s part of me,” She spoke, referring to her Klingon half, “I can control part of myself and at the same time, I lose control of other parts. It’s like,” She took a deep breath to strengthen her resolve, “Right now, I’m feeling myself I could never feel, and when she and I are apart of one another again, I won’t ever allow myself to feel it again. Is any of this making any sense?”
“Yes, I think so,” He nodded.
She reached out and lightly touched his cheek, “I love you, Chakotay. I have for quite some time, and I always promised myself that it was nothing more than a crush. I’m feeling it a lot more intensely now that I’m completely human, and I realize it’s more than a crush. I’m in love with you, and this may be the only time I ever get to tell you without her getting in the way.”
Chakotay blinked at her confession before realization hit him. He smiled slightly as he reached out to touch B’Elanna’s cheek, “I know. Truth be told, I’ve always known,” He brushed his thumb over her cheekbone, “I’ll always know,” He drew her lightly into his arms, “I know that this is going to be a tough transition for you, and I promise you that I’ll be here with you every step of the way.”
“After she and I are together again, Chakotay,” She spoke as she rested her cheek on his shoulder, “She’s never going to let us be this close to you again.”
“B’Elanna, trust me when I say that you’re never going to be without me…whether she likes that or not,” He teased slightly.
She could feel the smile in his voice and relaxed against him, “I know now that I can’t do this without you. I was foolish to ever think I could.”
“Don’t worry, B’Elanna,” Chakotay kissed her temple, “I’m not going anywhere. I’m right here with you.”
B’Elanna closed her eyes and held onto him, glad that her human heart had given her this chance to be held by the man she loved.
