I'm being thwarted at every turn. I may have to make the new machine dual Windows and Linux just to be able to run Second Life. Seems the windows emulator hates my version of Linux. There's a shell script that does all the work for you included in the distributable package. I'd have to reboot into linux to tell you what I did to get it to run, since it's been a while. I recall it was fairly easy to figure out though.

In the folder you created before you unarchived the distributable contains a shell script named, oddly enough, 'secondlife'. If it isn't executable, make it so. If it is, you should be able to run it by double-clicking that file in your file browser.
I went one step further and made a launcher for it. The procedure for this depends on the desktop interface you use (Gnome, KDE, etc.).
