...so is it just me, or did the latest Star Trek movie, as good and "original" and reworked as it was, still leave a lot to be desired? Maybe it's just that I always need to see a solid villain appear in a movie to act as a perfect foil for the heroes - and this movie didn't really have it

You're not wrong. The best Star Trek movies (with the exception of The Voyage Home) tend to have great villains in them. The ones with lousy villains tend to suck. I wasn't all that crazy about the new one either.
