I too thought that California would be the most liberal and open state too, so I'm surprised at the result.
I'm against marriage, whether gay or straight, but obviously I think that no matter your sexuality, you should be able to marry who you want (not children, of course!). How does two men or two women, or a man and a woman, for that matter, getting married affect me? It doesn't! So I really don't understand why other people want to control the lives of others. Also, allowing gay marriage would help the economy I'd imagine--there's a lot of money to be spent on weddings!
Now if certain religious faiths are against it, that's their perogotive - a church should be able to refuse on the basis of their beliefs. But if you wanted to be married legally at, say, a city hall ceremony or something, I don't think anything should be able to stop you.
That's a good point.
Just be sure to permit gay divorce as wellYES

Have you seen Mr. Olbermann's rant about the Republican's presidential campaign? You can practically feel his wrath through the screen.
I posted an article on my own journal that pretty much sums up my feelings on this matter, but to repeat it here: I don't care. Let 'em get married. I honestly don't see what the big deal is.
The Canadian gay marriage legislation was drafted/introduced by the Liberal party while they were in majority leadership but the vote took place after Paul Martin became minority leader. Also, aside from requiring his cabinet ministers to vote with the party, there was otherwise a free vote within the Liberal party. Which actually makes me prouder of my MPs that they chose to vote in support of gay marriage even when they aren't coerced to by party loyalty.
Good video. This does hit home because I keep thinking about how my parents, who were married in the early 70's, wouldn't even have been able to get married a decade earlier. It's the same thing with gay marriage. I keep wanting to ask people why they think this affects them so much. Seriously, put all this effort into trying to stop real evils. ::sigh::
