Five

Seohyun blinked her eyes open slowly, the sunlight that streamed into the room seemed to make the surroundings warmer, giving her a better reason to snuggle into her comforter further. Her eyelids felt heavy and puffy, did she cry last night?

Not letting puffy lids hinder in her quest stay in bed, she put the thought away and closed her eyes once again. Fragments of her dream came back to her now that she was more or less conscious.

It was a ridiculous one. She came home to a toddler who called her 'omma' adoringly. Her last memory of it was of the little girl sleeping snuggled against her.

'Crazy Seo Joohyun!' She berated herself. The stress at work must have caught up with her.

Pulling the comforter over her head, Seohyun could feel the sleepiness lulling her back. She vaguely registered hearing the door creak open and smiled in anticipation of Yonghwa's wake up kiss.

Walking over to her side of the bed, Yonghwa held out a finger to his lips, telling the baby in his arms that she needed to keep quiet.

As though on cue, Yeonnie put both her hands together and placed it on the side of her head, pretending to sleep on her father's shoulder.

Yonghwa couldn't help but smile at how adorable she was, before kissing her on the cheek.

He got closer to the bed tugged the covers down lightly. Seohyun's back was facing them.

Tugging a lock of hair behind her ears he sat down on the space beside her.

"Hyun~"

"Hmm?" Her faint murmur brought a smile to his face.

Yeonnie had by this time roused from her pretend slumber. Imitating her father, she stretched out her arm to pat Seohyun's head, earning a thumbs up from him.

If Seohyun did find anything out of the norm, she didn't show it.

"Hyun ah, breakfast is done. Palli wake up."

"Palli!" Yeonnie echoed after Yonghwa.

In the four years that he'd known Seo Joohyun, Yonghwa had never seen her sit up so fast.

Grabbing the sheets around her, Seohyun moved swiftly backwards while looking at him accusingly.

"What's wrong? Did you have a nightmare?"

"W-who is she?"

"She?" Yonghwa looked at her with doubt before looking down at a smiling Yeonnie.

Seohyun nodded, regarding the little girl in Yonghwa's arms with wary.

"My cousin's toddler, didn't I tell you last night?"

"N-ne?"

"Yeah the one who just came back from the states that you've yet to meet?"

"I t-thought she was our daughter?"

"Pabo ya. Did you have another dream? Yeonnie calls everyone either omma or appa." As though proving his point, Yonghwa moved his arms a little and Yeonnie called out 'omma' sweetly.

"You're lying!" Seohyun snapped, subconsciously moving backwards to put more distance between the child and her.

"Then what am I supposed to do, Seohyun ah? I said she's our daughter but you didn't believe it."

"Oppa! How do you expect me to believe something like that? I've never had a kid. We, have never had any children. How can I just believe that she's ours?"

"Look, let's not quarrel here. Go wash up and have breakfast first. We'll talk later?" He hoisted Yeonnie back into his arms and carried her out of the room, leaving Seohyun to stare at their retreating figures.

~~~~~~~~~~
"Ok, let's go, baby!" Yonghwa cheered and sat up, facing the girl.
"Tomato chingu..." Yeonnie poked a cheery tomato with her fork and held it to show to show Yonghwa before eating it.
As she munched on it, he repeated the syllable "nyam" with every chew she made.
"Wow Yeonnie ate tomato chingu! It'll keep her healthy! Do you feel healthy?"
"Ne!"
"Ok, next will be sausage chingu. This chingu will make you happy."
After comprehending what her father said, Yeonnie picked up a piece of sausage and ate it in one bite.
When it was done, she opened her mouth wide to show Yonghwa that she finished it.
"Woowah! Yeonnie feels happy now right?"
Nodding vigorously, Yeonnie picked up another piece of sausage to eat.
"Don't forget your eggs chingu baby, they'll make you healthy!"
"Healthy!" Yeonnie echoed cheerily.
Seohyun heard before she saw Yonghwa and the girl when she went to the dining area fifteen minutes later. They were apparently huddled over a plate laughing at something.
Oddly enough, she felt like she was intruding on something private for they both went quiet immediately upon seeing her.
"I made breakfast, come have some." Yonghwa gestured to the plate he'd laid for her opposite them.
Seohyun nodded and moved, trying not to make as much noise as possible, as though she didn't want to be noticed. A little ridiculous considering her presence was known. Starting on her breakfast in silence, it took less than five minutes before the two opposite her started their breakfast play.
"Appa ahhh..." Yeonnie picked up a piece of sausage for Yonghwa, "sausage happy!"
Yonghwa took it gratefully, before giving a wide smile, showing that he was really happy after eating the sausage.
Seohyun tried to concentrate on her food when she heard Yonghwa.
"Hyun?"
She looked up to the toddler with her fork pointing towards her with a cherry tomato on it, "omma, tomato chingu!"
Yeonnie looked at her with a bright smile and twinkling eyes. On her side, Yonghwa looked at her with anticipation, as if telling her to do as he did.
"Omma ahhh?"
She looked at the little girl for a split second before looking down again, eating her breakfast and pretended to not see what she did.
"Omm-"
"It's ok baby, omma doesn't feel like eating tomatoes, appa will eat tomato chingu." With an exaggerated bite, Yonghwa finished the fruit on Yeonnie's fork.
Since they both had no schedules for the day, Yonghwa and Seohyun stuck to their usual routine, i.e. lazing around the house.
Seohyun was unpacking her bags from last night, all the while hearing peals of laughter from Yonghwa and the little girl. When she went out of the room with laundry that needed to be cleaned, she was met with the sight of Yonghwa piggybacking the baby.
"Omma!" Yeonnie noticed her mother immediately, "omma look! Appa plane!"
Yonghwa paused to flash a goofy grin at her while Yeonnie continued to shriek in excitement. Both seemed to be waiting for a form of encouragement from Seohyun.
But her only response was to give a curt nod before making her way to the service balcony for the washing machine.
Father and daughter's smiles faltered with Seohyun's retreating figure.
"Appa... Omma wae?"
"I wish I knew, baby."
It seemed like this was how Seohyun's attitude to Yeonnie would be.
Yeonnie would run and play around, mostly on her own. But like most children, she sometimes would approach her parents for attention. Yonghwa went along with everything she did, piggybacking her, playing pretend, read her stories, draw with her and even watch cartoons with her.
Seohyun, on the other hand, would just sit in the corner of the couch to read. She told herself that maybe this is a lucid dream and that she should just ignore it until she wakes.
So lost in her thoughts that she jerked in shock when she got hit by something on her shoulder. She looked down an saw a small rubber ball by her side.
Yonghwa and the little girl stood in almost identical poses, guilty of hitting her with the ball by accident. Seohyun was thinking of something to say when she saw the baby running towards her then climbed the couch to stand beside her.
Yeonnie kissed the part of her shoulder that was hit by the ball then rubbed it. "Omma, mianhe..."
Awkwardly, Seohyun moved away from the baby a little. "I-it's ok." Using the distance between them Yeonnie leaned forward a little, putting most of her body weight on Seohyun.
"Don't angry..." Yeonnie started kissing Seohyun on her cheeks. "It's appa... not me..."
"Ya Jung Yeonhee!"
For the first time since she woke up today, Seohyun let out a laugh.
Sensing the slight change in Seohyun's demeanour, Yeonnie pushed her luck further. She sat down and leaned on Seohyun, her arms hugging her waist.
Not knowing what to do, Seohyun put her arms awkwardly, trying not to touch Yeonnie. As though understanding what her mother felt, Yeonnie took her hands away from Seohyun's waist and pulled her arm across her own shoulders.
Once she made sure that they were both sitting comfortably, she started playing with Seohyun's fingers. Time to time she'll look up and smile at her.
Even Dubu joined in the fun. She ran around Seohyun's legs and kept trying to jump up the couch.
Yonghwa breathed a sigh of relief from where he was standing. Maybe the whole my-daughter-from-the-future situation will be easier to handle now that Seohyun seems to be in it as well?
He really hoped so.
