I'm counting days until your homecoming, bro. I think it's worth noting that, for a second consecutive year, I'm not feeling a sense of overwhelming sickness at the impending anniversary of my natal emergence. I'm kinda liking it - maybe I'll make this lack of birthday depression a trend, or even a tradition.

And now, the reason for my above title: I have just encountered a siren song, the likes of which I've never been party to. It was magical, both frightening and hypnotic, a sound which set my feet to moving like a victim of Pavlovian circumstance.

It was a public payphone. And it was ringing.

Nobody else noticed. An endless stream of people passed between the phone and myself, some chatting in groups and some alone with their brows furrowed in concentration. None of them paid any notice; I was completely alone in my curiosity, staring mesmerised at the scuffed steel console until the others wavered and faded into gray nothingness. I sensed - I knew - that it chimed for my ears alone ( ... )
