“Ianto, wake up.” Jack bent down and gently shook his partner’s shoulder.
Ianto opened his eyes and struggled to sit up. “What is it? I didn’t hear the rift alarm. What’s going on?”
“Shh, nothing’s wrong, nothing to worry about,” Jack soothed, stroking Ianto’s hair out of his face.
“Then why did you wake me?” Ianto mumbled irritably as he lay back down and pulled the pillow over his head.

“You’re grumpy when you’re sleepy,” Jack laughed.
“No, I’m grumpy when you wake me,” Ianto said through the pillow, “I was quite happy being sleepy.”
Jack sat on the edge of the bed and carefully peeled the pillow away from his lover’s face. “I’m sorry for waking you,” he said solemnly, “but you would have been really annoyed at me if I didn’t.”

“Why?” asked Ianto suspiciously, raising himself up on his elbows having given up any hope of getting back to sleep now.
“Because I know you will really want to see this,” Jack said with an excited grin.
“See what, Jack?” Ianto asked in exasperation, “Stop speaking in riddles.”
“I’ll show you,” Jack said standing up, “Come on, sit up and I’ll show you.” He pulled the covers back and went to help Ianto to sit.
Ianto batted his hands away and sat up himself, “Oi, its cold.” He grumbled.
“just scoot down and sit on the end of the bed.”

Ianto did as he was told and Jack wrapped the duvet around him, cocooning him back inside its warmth.
“I’ll be right back.”
“Where are you going?” Ianto asked turning around to see.
“Just turning the lamp out,” Jack said as he crossed the hotel room to the bedside table. Seconds later he was back by his lover’s side lifting the duvet and snuggling in beside him before tucking it tightly around them both and staring out of the window over the rugged scenery of the Scottish Highlands.

“So what is it that I really need to see?”
“Shh, just look out there on the horizon and we’ll see it again in a minute.”
They sat in silence for a little while until Jack said, “There! Can you see it?”
“Yeah,” Ianto breathed watching a faint green glow appear in the distance. “What is it? Is it alien?”
“Just watch,” said Jack taking Ianto’s hand in his, “it will get better.”
The two men watched transfixed as the green glow got brighter and seemed to shift, a wave pattern forming and flowing across the sky, the colours changing with the shifting patterns.

“Is that…? Is that the northern lights?” Ianto asked, incredulous.
“Yup. Aurora Borealis.” Jack beamed.
“Wow. I didn’t realise you could see it this far south.”
“You can sometimes. It’s more visible at certain times of the year and it depends on the sun. The lights are stronger when the solar winds are more powerful. Solar weather seems to be quite cyclical. Every eleven years or so the lights are at their brightest and can be seen as far south as northern Scotland. Back in 1958 there was an exceptional solar event which meant the aurora where visible from as far south as Mexico City,” Jack explained. “When Archie asked us to help out all the way up here I really hoped we would get the chance to see it.”

“It’s beautiful,” Ianto whispered, leaning into his partner. “Thank you for waking me.”
