Oh great.
Way to go Hart.
John slammed his hand into the glass wall of the cell, only to be rewarded with a dull thudding sound and a sharp pain to his knuckles. The glass was of course unbreakable.
You could be anywhere in the universe right now but, oh no, you had to come back here and wind up locked in a cell next to two people who’d as soon shoot you as look at you.
He chose to ignore Gwen and Ianto, who he could hear rattling on their cage doors like monkeys at the zoo and shouting for someone to let them out. Who do they think will listen? Gray?
It’s only a matter of time before they start blaming you.
Who’s gonna be first? Ah yes. Eye Candy. Of course.
So why are you here John? Because you got an attack of conscience, that’s why. That last stint in murder rehab must have worked.
What’s the big deal? You’ve killed before. Done worse than this and yet this time you have to feel guilty. And this time it wasn’t even your fault! John started pacing around his cell, doing his own impression of a zoo animal, though he liked to think of himself more as a lion, ready to tear the keeper’s head from his body as soon as he showed himself again.
And why do you have to feel guilty? Oh yes, because of Captain Jack sodding Harkness!
You know he’ll never leave this godforsaken planet for you. He wouldn’t last time and he certainly won’t this time. Not after what you did to him and his friends and his city. John hit out at the glass again. Partly in a misguided hope that this time he’d get lucky and it would break, partly to try and draw the attention of Gray who had locked them in, but mostly to use the pain it caused to try and drown out the sound of the teenage girl that seemed to have taken up residence in his subconscious.
God, how could I have done that to him? John stalked to the back of the room, crouching down in the corner, clutching at his head. I should have put my foot down. I should have stopped Gray. John looked down at his wrist where the detonator had been bonded to his skin. He winced, the torn flesh was still tender. Probably would have got myself killed in the process.
He rested his head against the cold smooth wall of the cell. But Jack said it was ok. He pushed himself up. He just laid there in that hole and accepted his fate. Didn’t even flinch as I covered him with mud. Earth to earth, dust to dust, ashes to ashes. He’s going to die down there so many times.
He screwed his eyes shut and clenched his fists. Already has died hundreds of thousands of times, he corrected himself. How could I have done that to him?
I have to get out of here. Track the signal. Release him. Make things right.
John resolutely turned his mind away from wallowing in self-pity and turned his attention to his immediate problems. Reverse whatever Gray had done to set the weavils roaming free and release himself and the two Torchwood team members from their incarceration in the cells. He opened up the back of the PDA and started poking about at the controls.
“Got it.” He muttered to himself. Then loudly “Sorry”, as the awful noise started again.
“What have you done?” Gwen shouted accusingly as both her and Ianto held their hands up to their ears.
“Recall signal. Time for all the pets to return home.”
Now to try and find a way to override the door commands and get us out of here…
He was interrupted minutes later by Gwen’s sudden cry “Jack!”
John looked up as the doors opened and Gwen hurled herself at Jack. He looked on as they clung to each other “Oh god” she said into his shoulder.
Ianto emerged from the cell in a more dignified manner and he too clung to the captain, in a more manly way of course “Thought we lost you.” He said roughly.
“Never” Jack replied.
John hung back, suddenly nervous “Quite a queue for the hugs.”
“Always has been, always will be” Jack gave them one of his trademark grins, but it was a shadow of its former self.
He sobered quickly and looked at John “Nice use of the ring.” He paused, nodded slightly, “Thank you”.
John attempted a smile too, in acknowledgement of Jack’s words “That’s the least I could do.” But the smile hadn’t reached his eyes and fell quickly as he warned Jack “Listen, Gray’s in the Hub.”
“I know.” Jack said flatly without breaking eye contact with the other time agent, whilst Gwen still hung on to him, gazing up adoringly at him. Ianto, John noticed out of the corner of his eye, was standing behind Jack glaring daggers at Hart, clearly waiting to follow his Captain’s lead, a pit-bull ready to attack on his owner’s command. “It’s done.” Jack finished.
John searched Jack’s face, then stepped forward as Jack disentangled himself from Gwen and briefly squeezed Ianto’s hand, before opening his arms to his former partner.
The two men held each other whilst Gwen and Ianto looked on.
If Jack noticed that his neck was wet from John’s silent tears, he didn’t say anything, just held him tighter. “I’m so sorry” John whispered.
“I know” Jack answered quietly. “I forgive you.”
