Jack trudged up the stairs to Ianto’s flat, barely able to get up the energy to put one foot in front of the other. He wearily pushed open the door and stumbled inside.

Although Jack had a key, he never used it, and if the door was unlocked he would always shout or knock to announce his presence even though he no longer waited for an answer before entering.

Jack hadn’t been thinking as he left the garage, just followed his feet, his body knowing where it wanted to be even if his head hadn’t caught up yet. When he arrived in Ianto’s living room he tried to hide his pain and utter despair, schooling his features into studied nonchalance, allowing a small flirtatious smile to grace his lips as he greeted Ianto, who on hearing the door open had come out of the kitchen wiping his hands on a tea towel. Ianto was about to make some joke about Jack not knocking and how he must finally be feeling at home there, when he noticed the tension in the way Jack held himself.  His fake smile would probably have fooled anyone else but Ianto was too astute and knew his lover too well.

Ianto put his towel down on the coffee table, not taking his eyes off Jack “What’s wrong?”

Jack’s face fell. He had tried for a relaxed ‘I’m ok’, but failed miserably in the face of Ianto’s sympathy.

Ianto covered the distance between them in three long strides, and gathered his lover into his arms. Jack melted into his embrace winding his arms around Ianto’s back and clutching desperately at the younger man’s shoulders. Ianto pulled Jack’s head down onto his shoulder and stroked his thumb soothingly through the hair at the nape of the captain’s neck. Ianto’s other hand rested on the small of his lover’s back, holding his shuddering body close.

Ianto could feel the warm wetness spreading over his shoulder as Jack’s silent tears escaped, the captain trying desperately to retain his dignity, and failing as a strangled sob escaped his lips. Ianto merely held him tighter and rubbed soothing circles on his back as his lover gave in and let his sobs consume him.

When Jack had no more tears left to cry, Ianto spoke quietly, “What happened, Caraid?”
“John,” Jack whispered, “I couldn’t stop him. I’m sorry.”
“Hey, it’s ok.” Ianto soothed, kissing his cheek, "you want to talk about it?"
Jack shook his head, “I’m sorry, I can’t …”

Ianto took pity on him, he looked so lost. “Let’s get you out of these ruined clothes first. You can tell me about it later.”

Jack let himself be led through to the bathroom and stood patiently whilst Ianto turned the shower on to warm and then slowly divested him of his clothes, hanging the coat reverently on the back of the door to be dry cleaned later, but letting the rest of his clothes pool around their feet on the bathroom floor. Ianto quickly slipped out of his own shirt and trousers, and added them to the growing pile on the floor before ushering Jack into the shower, standing behind him with his hands on Jack’s upper arms, gently kissing his shoulders.

The warm water cascading down on them seemed to awaken Jack from his stupor. He took a deep breath, held it for a moment, and then let it out in a shuddering sigh. He cupped his hands under the water then raised them up to scrub at his face. That done, he turned around to look at his young lover. Ianto’s eyes were so full of love and concern that Jack was overcome with love and longing for the man. He reached up and cupped the back of Ianto’s head bringing their mouths together with bruising force. Ianto recovered from his surprise quickly and opened his mouth to his captain’s insistent tongue. Jack’s other hand snaked around Ianto’s shoulders drawing him even closer and Ianto responded by wrapping his own arms around his lover’s waist.

When the need for oxygen became so great that they had to separate, the men pulled apart leaning their foreheads together and breathing hard. “Ianto, please” Jack said desperately, “I need to feel alive.” Ianto was powerless to resist him. He ran his hands gently through Jack’s hair and kissed his way across his jaw to nuzzle at that spot behind his ear that drove his partner crazy.

Jack let out a low moan as Ianto let his hands roam down over Jack’s shoulders and softly caressed his sides his hands runningup and down until he felt Jack shiver. Ianto's hands  then wandered up over Jack’s chest, splaying out over his heart, feeling the steady beat jump and twitch as he kissed and licked at the pulse point on Jack’s neck.

Jack slid one hand down Ianto’s body to cup his arse, squeezing and massaging as Ianto continued his gentle caress of his captain’s body. Jack used the hand in Ianto’s hair to pull his lover’s head up to look into his eyes. “I won’t break Ianto, you don’t need to be so gentle” Jack held his gaze for a moment so that Ianto could see the earnestness in his eyes, then he grinned a predatory smile and crushed their mouths together. “Just make me feel alive,” Jack begged into the kiss.

That was all the encouragement Ianto needed as he moved his hands to mirror Jack’s, one on the back of his partner’s head, pulling their lips together as the kiss became messy and desperate, the other sliding down his lover’s glorious body to pull his arse closer creating delicious friction on their cocks. They were pressed so tightly together it was as if each was trying to melt into the other. Jack broke the kiss, moving his hand from Ianto’s hair to clutch at his shoulders, “I need you so much Ianto!”

“Need you too Jack!” Ianto gasped as his hands again mirrored Jack’s actions. Moving as one they pulled apart slightly and slid their hands around from each other’s buttocks to hold hands making a channel around their engorged cocks. Everything else ceased to exist as they moved together fucking their joined hands, their other hands grasping and clutching at each other’s backs, shoulders and arms, kissing messily under the hot powerful spray of the shower. “So close. God Ianto, so close” Jack moaned.

“Me too” Ianto replied, “come for me, come together.” They thrust together erratically, too close to orgasm to maintain any sense of rhythm as their tongues duelled first in one mouth then the other. “Ianto!” Jack screamed as he was the first to come, spilling his seed into the channel of their hands, the sudden warmth and extra lubrication pushing Ianto over the edge on his next thrust to follow him into sweet oblivion. They clung together, breathing hard as they let the water cascade over them.

After they had both come down from their climax, Ianto reached for the wash cloth and gently washed Jack from head to toe, scrubbing away the overpowering stench of exhaust fumes. Jack closed his eyes and hummed his appreciation as Ianto’s fingers worked their magic massaging in the shampoo. When he had finished, Ianto reached over and turned off the water.

Jack stepped out of the shower stall first, collecting a fluffy white towel off the heated towel rail and turned around just as Ianto was exiting the shower. Jack wrapped his lover in the warm towel and kissed his button nose. “Thank you,” he said simply before grabbing the other towel and drying himself swiftly as Ianto did the same.

The men then went into the bedroom to find some comfortable clothes. “So, what do you want to do now?” Ianto asked as he shrugged into his Blue Gillespie hoody.
“Actually, I’m hungry,” Jack answered as he hopped around the room struggling to put on his sweat pants.
Ianto supressed his laughter with difficulty, “You want to get a take-out then? The pizza place down the road is doing two for one.”
“Sounds good.”
“Why don’t you go and make yourself comfy on the sofa whilst I order it then?”

Jack went through to the living room and sat down on the sofa. He turned the TV on and flipped through the channels until he found an old Bond film to watch, but his heart wasn’t really in it.

Ianto came into the living room a short while later. “They’ll be here in 20 minutes. I got a veggie hot one and a meat feast.” Jack didn’t acknowledge him, just kept staring into space, “Jack? You ok?” Ianto asked as he walked over to his lover and sat down next to him. Ianto reached out and touched Jack’s leg, startling the older man. “Sorry,” Ianto said with a small apologetic smile, “Do you want to talk about it?”

Jack took a deep breath and let it out in a long sigh. “I thought it would be Emma that would be the problem. She’s so young. But despite missing her family, she seems to be doing ok.”
“Yeah, she seems to be quite a resilient girl” Ianto observed.
“Yeah. Obviously she’s going to miss her parents, and it being Christmas just makes it worse as she’s never had a Christmas on her own before. But she sees the positives in her situation. She has suddenly been transported to some totally foreign utopia where there is so much opportunity and so many choices that just weren’t available to her when she’s from.”

“Yeah, you should have seen her face when she saw all the things you can get at the supermarket! She loved the idea of having a film that you can watch at home. It made me see things in a different light. The things we take for granted!” Ianto smiled and shook his head, “Also, Gwen said she’s been applying for jobs and has been offered something by a big fashion company in London. She just wouldn’t have had the chance to do something like that before, well before…” Ianto trailed off.

“No, she wouldn’t. And that’s great, it really is.” Jack said, his demeanour not really fitting with the positivity of his words.
“But….?” Ianto prompted.
“John wasn’t so flexible.  I thought he would be ok when we first settled them in at the safe house. He said he would take care of the women, but he soon realised they didn’t need him. They were adjusting better than he was. I think that was the first thing, he felt surplus to requirements.”

“The world is moving too fast for him,” Ianto agreed, “when I took them shopping, the girls were excited by all the changes and all the opportunities that modern inventions and our consumer society have brought. He was disgusted by the excesses of modern living.”
“He couldn’t adjust. He didn’t want to. He had lost everything. His wife, his home, his job. He was a well-respected pillar of the community and now he was reduced to being made to feel like a child not knowing how anything works, or how to live in this future world. And today, seeing his only son in a retirement home losing his mind to Alzheimer’s was the last straw. He has no grandchildren, he was witnessing the end of his line. The end of his world.” Jack said sadly looking down at his hands.

Ianto took Jack’s hand in his own and squeezed it gently. “The future is a big and scary place for him especially when he feels so alone. It’s not the utopia of hope that it is for the young.”
“He’s not that old,” Jack retorted.
“I didn’t mean it like that!” Ianto said quickly, flustered.
“I know you didn’t,” Jack replied with a soft smile. “I tried to tell him that he wasn’t too old to try again. Given time he would get used to the different way of life. He would make friends, build up a business, maybe even meet someone he could love and start a new family with.” Jack looked up at Ianto, “He said he’d done all that. In his own time. When he was supposed to.” There was a intense sorrow in Jack’s eyes, not just the empathy and pain he felt for John but something deeper, more personal, that Ianto couldn’t fully understand. Ianto didn’t know what to say so he just raised Jack’s hand to his lips and kissed it, hoping that his silent message of support would convey more than any words ever could.

“He didn’t want to carry on. He said if I didn’t let him kill himself he would just wait until my back was turned and then he would find a way to do it anyway. He was scared. I told him that he wouldn’t get reunited with his family, it doesn’t work like that.” Silent tears started to spill down Jack’s face and his voice quivered as he continued “He wanted to die, Ianto.” Ianto let go of Jack’s hand and raised his arm over the captain’s shoulders pulling his lover to him. “I sat with him and held his hand as he died.” Jack snuffled.

Ianto reached out and touched two fingers to Jack’s chin, turning his head gently towards him. Ianto tenderly wiped his partner’s tears away with his thumbs. He pressed a soft, lingering kiss to his captain’s lips. “You did the right thing Jack. You helped him to die with dignity.” Ianto pulled Jack’s head down to rest on his shoulder and traced soothing patterns on his arm.

They sat like that until the doorbell rang, announcing the arrival of their food.
Ianto got up to go to the door. When he returned he sat down next to Jack and they both dug into the pizza, suddenly realising how hungry they were.

“Sorry about your car.” Jack said through a mouthful of pizza.

Ianto laughed. “It’s fine Jack. I’ll deal with it in the morning.” He squeezed Jack’s thigh and smiled as he sensed his captain relax.
