1956 - Montgomery becomes the first African American who was not a janitor to be hired at the Cape Canaveral. He repaired electronics in malfunctioning missiles and satellite equipment.
1958 - Montgomery leads the effort to create Brevard Engineering College to educate those NASA workers who wanted to move into careers in engineering. With NASA's support, the private college is founded. It leases classrooms at a public junior high school near Cape Canaveral. The segregated state school system refuses to allow it. Montgomery, who was the first student admitted to Brevard Engineering, withdraws his application so the school can open.
1961 - Brevard Engineering College moves to its own, private campus. Montgomery is readmitted.
Brevard Engineering College is now Florida Institute of Technology.
